Heated seat burned hole in seat leather

Hello All,

My Aunt has a 2009 e350, this morning she put on the heated seat and after a few minutes felt burning heat on her side and smelled something burning.

Pulled over and found the heated seat had burned about a golf ball size hole in her leather seat, her jacket, shirt and burned her skin.
Is this a common problem, recall etc...

Any info would be great....Thanks

Get in touch with a Lawyer ASAP like NOW. This is extremely dangerous and it needs to be documented and repair history found on the car. She could have been moments from the car being on fire.

I couldn't agree more with the post above. Normally, these were things I took care of myself with the dealer but since it is definitely out of warranty, they will try to see if they can get away with not doing anything. Be aware though hat there is always something to pay to the lawyers.

You can line up a lawyer and try to see if they'll even acknowledge the defect and if not, let the lawyer handle it.

take a photo of your aunts burn mark as well, if you could do it whilst your aunt is sitting on the burned seat to indicate exactly how she got the burn then thats better. i hate it when people go to lawyers just to make money but yours is a clear claim. shes lucky it wasnt serious.

Nothing serious but she does have a burn on her side. Burned through her heavy fleece jacket and sweater!

This is actually fairly common. We had it happen on our ML. Something gets broken in the seat heater "lines" in the seat cover from use and the flexing of the seat and then it shorts out. This is not negligence in any way on Mercedes. It happens. You will have to replace the seat cover to repair it. It's great she is ok.

But it is a safety defect that can cause serious injury or death. Deos not matter how old the car is. Remember the Ford pinto.

just because its fairly common does not mean its alright for it to happen. surely theres a fault somewhere and its definitely not from the end user. dont have to wait till the whole car burns down or worse theres somebody inside.

2005 CLK 500
I agree beejay, I have a 05 CLK500 and I had a problem with my car just stopped on it own in the middle of the busy highway, I had to press the SOS button and Mercedes had the car towed to on of their shops in Columbia SC, that happened April 2014 and it did it again this morning on my way to work. I don't drive it much only placed around 1200 miles since I had it.

Just had the same problem with my 2007 E350 today. Turned on the drivers heated seat and immediately smell something burning, now have a nice hole in the seat back and my new jacket.
