Replace Just One Coil Pack?

'Twas a great day until the '05 E500 Wagon started to shake like a OM617 with no motor mounts and a bad valve adjustment...

Cylinder 7 has tripped P0207 and P0307 3 times in the past decade. 77k on the clock, with new NKG Plugs ~1.5 years ago.

Since it's simple, and I'm at school with limited tools - aught I try to replace the coil pack first?

I know you can switch them around to see if the problem follows the pack - but I really just want this fixed asap.

It's safe to replace just one pack at a time - or is that frowned upon?

What else could be the problem - I've read that injectors can get stuck closed but in the past this problem has been magically resolved at the dealer with what I presume to be an ECU flash or a code clearing.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance - First mbworld post

I would move the pack around myself and see if it follows. I replaced my wire set before fixing the issue once, then a coil pack (single) another time. At $150...i'd want to know if it's a coil or wires.

So I left the Wagon off overnight and started it this morning - No missfire.

CEL still on - cleared the code with an auto-parts store loaner OBD2 scanner and all seems normal.

We will see if it returns. This is the 3rd time this has happened over the past decade all on the same cylinder.

I have had miss-fires in the e63 AMG after hard acceleration - Perhaps this is an ECU problem.

If it rained last night or there was high humidity, it is more than likely a coil pack. Mine was intermittent over a few years. There was a crack in the epoxy that moisture was getting in to.

Hmm, I'll keep this in mind. I've heard of leaky Valve Cover Gaskets letting oil drip onto the coil packs and foul them as well.

Good thing the coil packs are fairly straightforward to repair.

Also, I seem to be getting some black "goo" seeping out of the engine air filter housing. I will change the engine air filters soon and investigate.

Thanks

I've replaced one coil pack at a time and it hasn't been an issue for me. At the first sign of any misfire or hesitation, I pull the codes, it usually shows which cylinder has experienced a misfire or what bank the knock sensor has been tripped on, then I just buy the coil from AutoZone for $59, and replace it. I've done this with 4 out of the 8 coils thus far and it's just a result of my mileage.

Also, I used to think you should spend $150 on the dealership part, until I went to Autozone, opened the box, and realized it is the SAME EXACT DELPHI COIL, but one has the Mercedes logo on it, and one does not. $100 difference. Some techs I've spoken with seem to think coil packs never go bad, but they definitely do over time, and don't produce a quality charge that leads to a weak or poorly timed spark and therefore a misfire.

Mine are Bosch, not Dephi. I wish they were $60. I bought mine from Autohaus.

If you have the technical ability (I understand you're at school) change the valve cover gasket.

So the misfire is back - ran great for about a mile this morning and then the CEL cam on an the engine started to shake.

It ran fine all weekend, granted I didn't travel many miles.

I'll have a go at the coil pack as soon as I can get ahold of one. The Sparkplug DIYs from Pelican and this site seem to cover coil replacement pretty well - anything else I should look out for?

Also - do I really need the mercedes spark plug boot puller? or will my life be miserable without it?

Don't waste money on a cheap aftermarket coil I got one of ebay and it failed 3 months later, purchased a Bosch one since and 18 months later I've had no issues.

I would use the plug boot puller is will save you a world of pain I tried to do the job without it and ended up breaking the top of the plug off in cylinder which created its own issues. You can pick them up for like $17 well worth the cost given how much time this will save you.

I have bought a BOSCH one. Was Delphi or Bosch OEM in '05? I don't really know, or care, as long as it runs well.

I have the coil and specialty tool coming from out west to New England.

I probably should have got wires as well but I didn't know what length to get.

Is it safe to just pull the wires off at the pack and not the plug - seems to make sense - but wanted another opinion.

Cheers.

I didn't replace my wires they are still the original are working fine, and yes you can pull wire from coil end easily.
