Antenna system in W211 estate/wagon

Re: 2005 E320 4matic Estate (wagon)

So a little while back my key fobs stopped stopped working and my radio reception crapped out. The IR on the fobs kept working so it would seem that the problem is a radio antenna issue. So today I started to get to work at resolving the problem.

After taking out some panels you can see that there are three interconnected electronic modules for the antenna system:

Antenna/amplifier Part# A2118201589 above the rear left window:

Antenna/amplifier Part# A2118203089 above the lift gate window:

Parasitic Stopper Part# 2118209689 on the right side of the lift gate window:

The question now is, which one is the culprit.

Yes, I suspect that's the one, so I ordered a used one from eBay. It seems to be the primary unit and the other ones branch off of it.

Did replacing A2118201589 solve your issue?

I have the same fob issue and curious if you sucessfully resolved the problem. Also struggling to remove the trim panel that covers this part.

I’ll also add that the #8 fuse tied to this issue was blown and blew immediately upon replacing it. Not sure what that indicates or if that mirrors your experience.

Konigstiger listed the part as 2118201580 but I assume that was a typo?

Membership clarification, data card should list 763 = 2118201589.

See attachments. Also check alarm siren very common for internals to corrode or un-replaceable battery to expire. Here are compatible part #s if this is the problem.

I too have an E500 wagon (2005) and the RF stopped working. But I can't seem to find A2118201589 anywhere aside from non-US sites. Anyone know where I could get one? Used preferably? The amp in the hatch door had water damage and was replaced but that did not fix it (this is the grey cover one) and the 7.5A #8 fuse wasn't blown. Any ideas other than the A2118201589 amp being bad?

MB E320 4Matic Wagon 2005
....O.K.....I have a similar problem with my 2005 E320 4Matic Wagon - 175K miles - first symptom was the key fobs wouldn't work on the doors and rear hatch - replaced batteries - seems the key fobs are O.K. - but still wouldn't lock/unlock doors. Found that the AM radio wasn't "working" - no signals. Diagnosis was it was the rear - over the glass of the hatch RF antenna that needed to be replaced. Reported all wiring functioning.
Replaced the antenna, but still key fobs and AM not working. Any ideas, suggestions.....cost up to this point is just under $600 for diagnosis, repair/replacement - helluva price to pay for non-resolution of the problem. HELP!

Most common key fob w/radio problem is bad antenna amplifier part # 2118201589 (need VIN to confirm) located @ d pillar. Check fuse f8 @ rear SAM. See attachments above: https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...ml#post7824955

I just wanted to chime in. i replaced that module and it wasnt the issue. The issue was the 12V line was broke on mine. If anyone needs the A2118201589 I have one here spare as my original one works after fixing the 12V power issue.

i am taking out my shark fin antenna. i hope. i don't need any of the parts for it because i only listen to my USB and bluetooth (i have a pioneer NEX headunit). i just looked at the mercedes manual for my car and it says that i need to take down the whole headliner (about 40,000 different instructions associated with that!) to take off that stupid shark fin. this seems like a total pain in the butt. i don't need any of the parts associated with that antenna. if someone wants 'em they can have them for the price of shipping. i assume that they are the same for all of the w211 wagons. it'd be nice if king climber? konigstiger knows another way... perhaps i can pull down the back slightly, get my and in there and then do what??

Correct carefully detach headliner at rear until antenna lines are exposed, self-explanatory from there.

these are the steps, indeed. however, if you've got an estate with the 3rd row seating, you must remove the bezels around the seat belts where the come from the headliner. you won't be able to do it without crumpling something if you do not. the bezels are split on the back and won't come out unless you pop them apart, lift off the snap fits on the back with a small screwdriver and then slide them out from the d pillar cover towards the inside of the car. here's a picture of the bezel from the left side of the car.

Hi,
Did you eventually get this resolved? I'm having the same issue on my '04 E320 Wagon. Key fob RF doesn't work, blows #8 fuse.
My plan is to unplug the antenna amps one by one to see which one is causing the short.
If unplugging the amps doesn't stop the fuse from blowing, my next step is the unplug the alarm
under the car. If that doesn't do it, I guess I'll be troubleshooting some wiring.
Thanks,
Tony G

E320 Wagon 2004
Hello ag9123,
I also have a 2004 E320 Wagon with same problem. No 8 fuse blows. I replaced the alarm siren, same fuse blows.
Now I am removing each of the three amplifiers. Have you had luck diagnosing by plugging in each one individually and watching if fuse blows ?
Looking for any other way to tell if these antenna amps are working or not.
Thanks,
JD
