Where is B24/15 rotary speed and lateral acceleration sensor located?

Hi Everyone!

I have recently purchased a 2006 MB E350 4Matic Sedan W211.

The orange ABS lamp is “on” all the time. Also, sometimes an ESP error message shows up in the round multifunction display (speedometer) reminding me to have it checked in the garage.

I ran the scan with the i980 iCarsoft scanner. It showed a couple of errors as follows:
1. 4C32 Check B24/15 (Rotary speed and lateral acceleration sensor).
2. 9450 B31 (C-ACC multifunction sensor).

I took my time and did all four wheels.
I removed each speed sensor, cleaned it thoroughly with a tooth brush and many Q-tips. Also, I cleaned the cylindrical holes with the compressed air, Brake cleaner and Q-tips. Yes, all four of them.
I ran the scan again. No change. The ABS lamp is still “on”.

It seems to me that it is the B24/15 sensor. I looked for it everywhere! I looked for help in the MBWorld forum. One member mentioned that the sensor is located under the back seat. I removed it. There are no sensor, cables, wires, connectors, etc. Nothing!

Another member mentioned that it is located under the passenger’s seat under the carpet.

Can anyone tell me where exactly the B24/15 sensor is located before I start cutting and striping the carpet, please?

Just tell me where it is. I will do the rest. I promise.

I hope that replacing this faulty sensor will make the ABS lamp “on” and the intermittent “ESP” errors go away in the instrument cluster.

Thank you in advance.

AllData for my car shows the B245/15 sensor (Turn Rate and Lateral Acceleration sensor) as located next to the center tunnel under the passenger seat, under the carpet. There are two black boxes there, the one you want is to the rear. The picture that accompanies that description shows it as well.

1 Remove front seat
NOTE: Right front seat.
2 Remove front edge guard (2) in area of front scuff plate (1)
3 Remove front scuff plate (1)
4 Remove rear edge guard (4) in area of rear scuff plate (3)
5 Remove rear scuff plate (3)
6 Unclip rear footwell ventilation grill (6) (arrow) and remove
7 Remove rear passenger compartment floor covering (7) below B-pillar paneling (8).
8 Lift up rear passenger compartment floor covering (7).
9 Guide out electrical wiring harness (5) from rear floor lining (7)
10 Unscrew nuts (9)
11 Remove yaw rate and lateral acceleration sensor (B24/15)
NOTE:
Note correct installation position.
The yaw rate and lateral acceleration sensor (B24/15) is susceptible to shocks.
12 Unplug electrical connector (10)
13 Install in the reverse order

Given that it looks like a real PITA to get to, I'd make darn sure that's what the problem is before taking apart the car's interior. Any chance of getting the car properly scanned with a STAR computer?

As usual, your results may vary. My car is an '05 CDI. A $30 Alldata 5 year subscription for your car would be money well spent, IMHO.

B24/15 = yaw rate/lateral acceleration sensor (turn rate sensor) part # 2165420018.

B31/2 = dual zone AC (code 580) dew point sensor part # 2118300572, unless you have 4 zone (581) B31 = multifunction sensor 2118300472.

Dear Rapidoxidation,

Thank you so much for pointing out the exact location of the “culprit.” Now, I know where to look for it.

Thank you for the step by step instructions.
I will jump right into it! I will keep you posted.

As per the STAR computer scan, I am between a rock and a hard place because the car is not safetied and does not have the plates. It is sitting in my home small garage. I have to have the safety first. It will never pass the safety check with the ABS lamp “on.” All the repairs and fixes I have to have done at home unless I towed it to the nearest MB Stealership.

Yes, I will look into the Alldata access. As you said, it seems to “be money well spent.

Thank you again.

Dear Konigstiger,

Thank you for all of the attached PDF files and the thumbnail not to mention the part numbers. Now, I know what to look for and where it is. I am all set now.

I located the B31 sensor right away on the right hand side under the hood. I unscrewed it (3 screws), cleaned the connector and screwed it back on. I cleared the code with the scanner. I ran the scan again. The error code is not coming back! Hurray! One down.

Thank you again.

Hello Rapidoxidation,

I bought the the B24/15 sensor (used one). I followed all of the listed steps; removing the front passenger seat, removing the faulty sensor, putting in a new one in, etc.

I crossed my fingers, turned on the ignition and... nothing has been changed. The ABS light is still "on".

I was able to clear the DTC using the scanner but it is "on" at all times.
I went deep into the scanner's options.
The stop pedal switch works fine (as per the scanner).
The emergency brake works fine (as per the scanner).
The ESP switch works fine (as per the scanner).
The speed sensors (four of them) work fine (as per the scanner). I test drove my car and the scanner detected the wheels' speed. It showed the turning speed right on the scanner.

I even removed the stop pedal switch. I carefully disassembled it, cleaned it, and put it back in. I ran the scan again.

The orange ABS light is still "on."

Any other ideas, please?

Is your scanner showing page with sensors working? Can you post the picture?
I run test on my MaxiEcu and looks like I can troubleshoot lot of things with it.

Hi Kajtek1,

Yes, my iCarsoft i980 scanner showed a page with sensors working on its small display. I do not have that picture available at this point of time.

I contacted the MaxiEcu's Customer Service in Poland via email in perfect Polish.
Due to the time difference I am expecting their reply to my questions tomorrow EST.
I studied their scanner offers on their portal. I have decided to buy the MaxiEcu scanner from them. However, I need to iron out a few wrinkles like S&H to Canada, dollar exchange and any customs fees.

Thank you,
Pitek

Was a resolution to this problem ever found? I'm working on a 2006 W211 Wagon with non-functioning cruise control and ESP error message. My next step is to replace the Yaw sensor but I'd like to have some greater confidence that will actually fix the problem before bothering.

No. The issue has never been resolved. I am waiting on the MaxiEcu scanner from Poland right now. It is on its way as we speak.
I hope this great tool will help me to close this unresolved issue chapter in my MB.

Please see my previous posts. The sensor replacement did not change a thing in my case.

I'll keep you posted.

Thanks,
Pitek

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I saw that the sensor replacement did not fix your problem, and I've also read that the sensor itself is rarely the root-cause problem.

My Launch Creader VII+ scanner provided different info than what you've got, so we may very well have different problems. Here's what it provided....
4CF1 Component B24/15 Rotary Speed & Lateral Acceleration Sensor (Yaw sensor)
9003 Airbag Low Voltage

From what I've read lots of people have replaced the yaw sensor without any effect (i.e. the sensor was likely fine). With the car I'm working on now, the previous mechanic claims to have tried two different yaw sensors with no effect before giving up. We're not certain he actually did what he said, but have no solid reason not to believe him.

Back working on this car. In the mean time I confirmed that the yaw sensor was previously replaced with no change. I updated my Benz data and pulled codes again as follows.....

4CF1 Check component B24/15 (Rotary speed and lateral acceleration sensor)
4D41 Check component N49 (Steering angle sensor)

Both codes will clear but the 4CF1 immediately returns. I imagine 4D41 will eventually return.

So now that I am indeed getting the steering angle sensor error code, I can only imagine that is the next thing to replace, yes?

did you disconnect battery? turn wheel lock to lock, if esp light doesn't go off then yes maybe you need a new sas however some actual values would be marvelous before shotgunning a sas!

One year later, I gave up on this a while ago but now my neighbor is bugging me to get it fixed again. Was there ever any resolution? A "mechanic" recommended that he replace the ESP module.

Anyoneknow where the B24/15 rotary speed sensor is located on a 2006 w215 model. I removed the right front seat and rear seat along with carpeting, the sensor was nowhere to be found under there, the best part was being able to clean under there, anyway if anyone knows where it is located i would really appreciate the info. thanks

Hi Konigstiger,

Would you be able to find out the production date of this M-B S550 automatic transmission by the attached number, please?
Also, any additional information about that tranny would be appreciated.

I will have the donor's VIN tomorrow afternoon. When I get it I will ask you for the Data Card for that vehicle as well, please.

Thank you,
Pitek
