noise in front of motor

I just installed a 32k mile salvage engine in a e350 and I have a noise and it sounds like the timing tensioner or a lifter. how do I check/change the tensioner first?

you would need to set basic timing on the camshafts. Then the only way to inspect the tensioner would be to remove and replace it with a new one.

A good method to rule out some things is to remove the serpentine belt and run the engine briefly to see if noise persists. Tensioner noise and other types of pulleys noise problems would be ruled in or out.

That ticking noise could be due to evaporator purge solenoid valve operating, located right behind driver's side headlight, which doesn't operate constantly. That tick is common in many W211 gas based engines. Also you might wanna check camshaft timing as cmirv wrote.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to record ticking noise for us to take a listen.

This video could shed some light on timing issue. You could record something using your smart phone!

You would need to remove camshaft sensors and set timing via crank pulley. There's alot of tutorials on youtube about checking timing on a M272. Yes, a bad tensioner could cause a ticking noise. So could a stretched timing chain and oil pump chain.

I pulled the tensioner out and it looks different than the one on the old engine I pulled out. this one has a 10mm allen in the end of it and the old one don't. how do you tell if its bad or not? also I wouldn't think this has a stretched chain since the motor I put in only has 32k on it. I thought my engine is a w211? help me here lol.

What year was the engine that you put in? Did it have the balance shaft problem? M272 is the engine type, W211 is the body platform. They also used the M272 in the 2010-2011 cars even though that was the W212 platform. Some early 2007 models also had the balance shaft problem along with all the 2006 engines.

did you change the ECU over with the motorswap. Im a bit of a newb with mercedes and maybe I didnt understand it correctly but I thought ECU's were not simply swapped over on these cars and they had to be programmed to work with said car correctly. again dont quote me but I thought I read that somewhere about these cars

those are alternator, secondary air injection and throttle valve faults. you need to find someone who knows a thing or two about mercedes and have them inspect the noise.
