Transfer Case?!?!

well im slowly coming around and thinking the shutter noises im hearing at low speeds plus clicking would only be transfer case. I cant really imagine it being anything else from all the stuff ive looked at online. Should i replace the oil, is it worth doing it. Is it worth getting another used unit if most have this problem.

Well did my transfer case oil change. First my mechanic was shocked that it hardly had any oil in it he said maybe a couple of ounces. After the oil changed i noticed its atleast 75% better. Not 100% but im happy with it fir now. Im gonna do another change after 1500 miles. Im suprised since it has no seepage nor a leak so why so low i have no clue. Guess thats what happens when you buy a really used car its full of strange suprises, mostly bad lol. The diff was also changed.

My guess is the fluid was changed once before your ownership incorrectly. There are actually 3 holes on the transfer case. A drain, and an inspection hole that are very obvious and a fill hole that is much higher up and requires removal of the driveshaft to access.

I think most independent shops without experience assume the inspection hole is the fill hole and don't end up getting enough fluid in there.

hmm, there should be three. A fill, a fill level and a drain. May be wrong because some t/cases differ but regardless, it will make a difference in the shuddering which is good.

I hope he did it right, he removed tranny mount to get access with bracket usually if he did it wrong he wouldve told me it was easy and filled it without removing anything at all, then would for sure be a sign he did it grom inspection hole. Either way i gotta do another change in 1500 miles.

I've just gone through this again on mine for a 2nd time since owning. First time, I saw the 2 holes and filled it and thought it was good. After some driving I got some AWD binding/shuddering and decided to do it again.

Removing the tranny mount only gives you access to the drain and inspection holes. You have to remove the driveshaft to access the upper fill hole.

After doing this job twice myself, I'm confident that you can't get even close to a quart in there through the inspection hole. I'd do it again yourself or take it someplace else.

Im gonna change it again in 1500 miles gonna just take it to a shop that deals with mercs only and have him swap it and fill from the top. I kept pushing him on it that driveshaft has to be removed and the 3rd plug you couldnt find is at the very top he insisted hes done it right. Car is way better then before no doubt but kinda worried ill change it in a few hundred miles hope its gonna be ok. Im a bit confused as well what i read is you stop filling from fill whole at the top when it starts to leak out through inspection whole but you cant fill through the inspection whole till it leaks?. Just confused not very knowledgable with these cars at all.

can anyone send me a pic or pics of were it is the fill plug.

It's not an E, but one of the pictures here shows the fill plug after separating drive shaft and it appears very similar to how my 07 E550 is.

https://mbworld.org/forums/c-class-w...id-change.html

If you fill via the inspection hole, fluid will drip out from there before you can get fluid evenly dispersed throughout the case, which is why they put the actual fill hole up much higher.

So i call 2 dealers today ask them how much just to top of my transfer case since it was filled through inspection hole and not from the very top. Both say never heard of filling from top and removing driveshaft at all only fill through inspection hole till it spills over. Just weird man i cant find anyone even merc dealer knowledgable enough lol.

unqualified haha.if he filled it till it spewed out of inspection hole then fluid level is more then likely correct. Not really sure if people r/r drive shaft or not but i've always just lowered t/case enough to get my tool up there. Everyone does things differently. I just know if i had a 4matic i would want to fill from the top so fluid drips/pours from the highest point cleaning those deposits up top as well. But that's just me!
