Diesel E320? Go brag to your Prius buddies.
I have a 2005 E320 CDI and I'm continually impressed by this car. I'm in the middle of a 1,200 mile interstate trip and getting 38 MPGs driving ~85mph. Priuses get about 32 MPGs at anything above 70mph. Not to mention 3x the torque and 2x the horsepower.

How are you calculating mpg? Are you going by the mpg dashboard display or are you calculating it when you fill the tank? I think your actual mileage may be more like 34 mpg, maybe 36 mpg if all highway driving. Still impressive for the size and weight of the e320.

Yeah I get around 32mpg at 85mph. I get 34 at around 60mph. I am in the process of swapping my oil cooler and found a bunch of sludge in the intake and other various parts. The parts are all cleaned now and am reassembling everything. I am assuming since the engine will breath better now my mpgs will go up.
How many miles do you get with one tank?

I'm getting 32 mpg with a roof rack, canoe, and bike up top.
Generally getting 36 or 37 easily (calculated) with usual stop and go driving.
Easily get closer to 40 on long trips with nothing on the roof.
Not sure if there was a tailwind or not, but I was getting an honest 40mpg at 80mph running across the country last year - I think it was in Nebraska. 2 gallons per hour burn rate. Pretty good...

The math was there if I wanted to. But it'd be damn hard to sit in one seat for 11 hours straight and I don't care to run the tank less than 1/4 full anyway. Every three or 4 hundred miles it's time to stop and fill the tank and drain me.

That's fine if you believe and go by the computer MPG reading!
My average is 34 MPG manual check for over 20,000 miles of mostly highway & interstate driving at legal speeds +5 mph or so.

I've found that the car's computer is about 3% optimistic on its mileage calculations. That is, if it says 35mpg it is realistically about 34mpg. At any rate, I am consistently above 35mpg on my fill ups, and that's dividing the miles driven by the gallons delivered by the pump.
The older VW Tdi's got reliably better mileage than the newer ones. Maybe the Mercedes brand suffers the same consequences of youth and tighter emissions regulations.

I average about 36-38 MPG straight highway, however mine is tuned using Kess V2. Curious how much torque I have. Best I ever got straight highway, no turbo or fast acceleration I got 42 MPG. Still this is ridiculously impressive since the E320 CDI weighs 4000 LBS

That is amazing. I know the new Cruz diesels get over 50 mpg, very tiny car though. Wonder what you could push with a tune and mods? I am surprised Dodge has not put the 3.0 v6 diesel in the Charger to challenge the market on four door sedans that get good mpg. The have it in the Ram and the new Wrangler coming out. Right now the only big sedans with diesel in the USA, are the s350, E320 CDI/Bluetec last the 335d BMW (almost bought one). Also the New Bronco coming out better have the 3.0 diesel option. Last I was disappointed the Renegade did not get the 4 cylinder diesel used in the GLK250.

Let's face it- while 320 cdi was break-thru technology few years ago, the technology went on high gear since.
The W212 4-cylinder has about the same HP 320 does, but with 7 sp it feels way more powerfulll and smoother.
Mu Ford truck diesel engine is 440HP rated. It was pulling 18,000 lb combos on those Bakersfield and Baker long grades at 1800 rmp with no temptation to downshift.
Yet the truck likes low speeds and really shine (mpg-wise) at 40 mph.
MB sedan sucks at 40 mph, but delivers excelent mpg > 70 mph.
Still we are talking HP and mpg that 20 years ago was consider die-hard racing or laboratory.

Not a big deal but I rented one two weeks ago and would not call the current Cruze "tiny car"
Perfectly usable 4 door compact sedan.
The car was fine for a compact, but the small gasoline engine sucks - we should probably get used to that though!
I sure hope the Cruze Diesel will succeed, but I will never buy a GM voluntarily

Since installing the Rocketchip stage 1 a few months ago, I do average 38 mpg doing 70 mph. With a roofrack and a bike carrier.
Confirmed by filling up to the brim. Also using Diesel Kleen, gray bottle.
Without rack and carrier, doing 60 mph, I get over 40 mpg.
Sadly, I am tempted to step on it all the time, it's just hard to resist.
So I am never around 38 mpg, more like 32.
