Low Battery + Visit Workshop = FRUSTRATION!

Hello

I have read through many of the posts here. Many of them are similar to my problem but I have not found one that helps.

2006 Mercedes E350 Base

After recent visit to dealership to have transmission valve body replaced. (tranny stuck in limp mode/1st gear), dealer also provided "health check" of the vehicle. (never asked for it, but whatever...)

Recommended replacing both batteries, brakes and tires. I knew about the tires and brakes. I opted to have those done myself. Not more than a week later, I got the "Low Battery, Conven. Functions Temporarily Unavailable" along with the "Visit Workshop" messages. (Seems to be extremely coincidental since I never got the message until after the dealer told me to replace them)

Well, I get it about the convenience functions not being available, but the power steering went out also. Since when it power steering a convenience? Basically the car can't be driven. Turning the steering wheel is nearly impossible.

So I replaced the aux battery under the hood, following instructions I found on this forum. Started the car, everything comes. I try to turn steering wheel and error comes back, still no power steering and all convenience functions shut off.

Replaced main battery. Start car, same results. Error remains, still no power steering or convenience functions.

What else should I be looking at? The dealer never mentioned anything else that needed to be replaced. (battery relay, fuse, etc?)

Thanks in advance.

Is it easy to view the serpentine belt to check for wear? I thought the serpentine belt controls more than just the power steering, and why would the low battery warning message still be present?

Pull up the battery bus voltage on your instrument panel (see Youtube for DIY). Confirm at least 12.2 volts on bus with engine off, ~14 volts on bus with engine on.

Be advised when you pull power from the car, the computers reset. Turning the steering wheel lock-to-lock is the method to reset the steering angle sensor. If not reset, you will get ESP malfunctions because the sensor is not calibrated. Search and you will find the truth.

Thanks. I just checked the battery voltage. 12.2 when off, 11.7 when turned on and kept dropping. That means my alternator is not working, right, or should I check anything else also?

FYI - I may need to lift the front end of the car to get the wheels to turn. Nearly impossible while the car is sitting still and risky to drive with no power steering. Also, I am not getting any ESP error.

Well, thanks for asking me to look at the serpentine belt. Found out why the PW wasn't working as well as the alternator (which I was getting ready to purchase)

This is my belt...well, what's left of it...

Heading to the store right now.

Ok, think I found out why my belt is in pieces. Googled the part# 000 202 10 19 which is visible on the pulley and it comes up as the Drive Belt Idler Pulley. Some stores show a replacement pulley but mine does not look like it can be removed. Does anyone know what it is connected to or is the bracket it is attached to, part of the entire unit or is it something else?

You should have Allen head bolt behind the center cap. (drawing might show different set up with the same pulley)
Don't know 350 engine, but MB star putting cheap bearings on pulleys and tensioners starting with W210 engines, meaning replacing them is consider maintenance items.
Consider replacing them all.

Thanks to everyone that posted. I went to youtube to find out how to replace the drive idler pulley and found that it was a cap covering the bolt. Used a flathead screwdriver to remove the cap, used a T50 torx driver to remove the bolt and presto-chango! Installed my autozone replacement pulley, installed serpentine belt and voila! Everything works and all messages cleared!

Special thanks to Maroc_Specops for mentioning the serpentine belt. Surprised I was not getting more messages since the entire belt was shredded to pieces. Saved me from purchasing the alternator.

Again, thank you all. Not the way I planned on spending my father's day but had to get my daughter's car fixed and she spent the day with me watching me work.

Next weekend, brake job...
