2008 E-350 Recently purchased

Hi Guys - I recently purchased a E-350 from a private party for $8,000.00. It had 101k miles on it, and the previous owner has all the records for it
I am retired so I am only going to be putting about 5k miles per year. I have had to replace a fuel filter already, and with this being a PZEV model it required replacing the fuel tank also.
This would have been a $3,000.00 job however my model is covered for 150k miles so it was covered.

Is the '08 E-350 considered a good reliable model? It's a beautiful looking car, very fast and drives great. Are there major expenses I am looking at in the near future that are endemic to this model?
If so, what could they be and at what mileage so that I can prepare for them.

THanks,

Allen

Around the 100-110k mile mark i had to do the following to my car (also a PZEV and a E350).

-Needed to replace the entire front suspension essentially (all control arms, shocks, shock mounts, sway bar links) as they were all worn and made noise
-Rear shocks
-New water pump, idlers and pulleys
-Intake Manifold
-Fuel Tank (due to leaky fuel issue)
-Oil cooler gasket
-Cam shaft magnets
-Flex disc
-Motor mounts including the transmission
-Transmission Service
-Blower motor
-Keyless go door handle

Do you call a car with all of those problems a great car? Why do these cars fall apart so soon? You buy a Honda or a Toyota and they are trouble free for hundreds of thousands of miles. MB has been making cars for over 100 years, they should get it right by now

They look and drive great, are very safe and are a great status symbol, but you shouldn't have to put 20K into one of these within 120k miles.

Does MB design them to fall apart in 100K miles or so ?

not 20k more like 5k and it helps if you do all the work yourself. Great car because the 07,08,09 eclass was the best designed out of all the years in addition to what you said too.

if your not prepared to maintain a $50k vehicle then it’s not for you. A $20k Honda will have cheaper parts and labor across the board. When you say fall apart, I don’t call a few parts “falling apart”. falling apart is the floorboards and chassis rotting out and every component rattles and squeaks. MBs will essentially run forever if maintained. Honda’s will “fall apart” at 300k. MBs will not and still look great at 300k.

there are sacrifices for Ride comfort and performance that you simply cannot have with a Honda.

I assume being retired you won’t be doing much DIY, so allocating $2k a year for maintaince should be about right. May be less since you will only put 5k/yr on it.

All of the parts that were replaced (except for the fuel tank and intake manifold) are wear and tear items. Its unavoidable on any car, especially German cars. In my example all the parts that were replaced never fully failed or broke down, they were all caught during inspections or they presented minor symptoms. If you consider basic maintenance "falling apart" then this is definitely not the car for you.

And remember car originally sold for nearly $60K out the door, so paying $8K is an awesome deal, considering the entire picture, enjoy your Benz!

How long the suspension parts will last is very dependent on the condition of the roads where you live, and if your driving is mostly city or highway. How you drive also plays a big part in it. Generally a city car will need to have its suspension overhauled much sooner than a highway car because the roads in town are generally in poorer shape than the highways. A car that gets driven aggressively will also need suspension parts replaced sooner. Another factor is simply age - these cars are getting older and the rubber bushings will start to deteriorate from age, whether or not the car is driven. This typically happens faster in hot climates. The same happens to rubber belts and hoses, and the rubber in the motor mounts. I live in a cooler climate and once owned a 20 year old car, and most of the rubber parts were in decent shape. The same car in Arizona would probably have all dry rotted rubber.

The idler pullies and belt are a good idea to do as preventative maintenance, Continental sells a kit that includes the two idler pullies and belt for a reasonable price (less than $200 Canadian). Would probably be less than an hour labor if you had a shop do it.

One common item that goes all the time is the motor mounts. They're liquid filled so it really isolates the motor from the body for a smooth ride. Some other cheaper cars will just have rubber mounts instead of liquid ones. Not as smooth a ride but cheaper and probably lasts longer. Those are the trade offs in engineering that are done. I don't fault them at all for making that choice.
