Are there two fuel pumps on the diesel like on the gassers? Someone will be along shortly with the correct answer. If there is, I'll bet your transfer pump (moves fuel from one side of the tank over the differential hump to the other) isn't doing what it should be doing.

W211 has a saddle tank that uses venturi effect from returning fuel to suck fuel from passenger side to driver side where electric pump pushes it to engine. T
The Venturi require precision placement or will not work and your engine will run out of fuel with 6 gallons in passenger side saddle.
Did you have any job done on the tank?

Sounds like this is the problem.
Now you have to go back there and make sure everything is done by the book.

it was fuel filter in my case. There is not enough pressure in returning fuel to create venturi. New filter was the solution.
