STAR Diagnostics - laptop

Is it possible to get the software and tools to access the car's CPU through a laptop? Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks.

You can lease one from MBUSA if you qualify as a certified repair facility.

They only charge $25,000.00 a year for the privilege.

If you just want to read and erase codes, and view some live data stream items, any generic scanner with OBDII capability will work.

Acutally, I know where to get the software, however, the latchup hardware may be harder to obtain.

I guess STAR is out of the question..

Would I be able to make changes to preference-type items, such as RDS on/off? Reading fault codes and streaming data is also what I'd like to acheive.

Can I get one for a chrysler, or just the generic?

Nope. You need the STAR DAS to do that.

They are not too difficult to find on the used market for under $10,000. A new model is $28,000 (of which MBUSA marks up around $16,000).

If anyone is seriously interested I can put them in touch with someone to supply used ones for under $10K, which includes laptop, software, ACTIA multiplexor, and three cables.

I'm not that serious as to spend 10K.

I'd pay 1-200 for the regular OBDII informational type setup.

I guess I'll have to continue argueing with service department for RDS.

Apparently not, there seems to be no setting for it, although the audio gateway (which controls the tuner functions) has the capability of receiving RDS on US models.
