Hi all, im having a problem with my car in that it doesnt always crank over. When the key it turned sometimes the car will make a click noise and stop, sometimes it will spin the engine a few times and stop, and sometimes it will start just fine. So far in diagnosing i have changed the starter, replaced the crank position sensor, checked the battery, and replaced the fuse and relay. I also tested and found out that when this problem occurs the starter relay does not get power. If i manually jump the relay then the car will start just fine. Aditionally this problem mostly occurs when it is hot outside. This issue happened last summer, went away for the winter, and is now back again. Any suggestions on what this could be? Thank you.
Did the info konigstiger provided help you? I have this EXACT same situation happening with my 2004 E500 (W211) and the starter was just changed and it still has the same symptom you have. I have two keys and confirmed that the problem is present regardless of which key.
Did a load test on the main battery and it held up perfectly.
Hi all,
i have the same problem with my w211, changed battery and checked all fuses, I will replace fuse 59 today to a 20a and see if that works.
However I did have Road assist out which after checking all the fusses found that there is no power to the starter relay. Any thoughts please.
cheers
Mine was never resolved, unfortunately.
Changed:
Starter (the shop this this 3 times and it is a really difficult job in this car.,)
Battery,
Alternator,
Checked: connections under passenger footwell, fuse in trunk area, cables, grounds. Nothing shown on STAR-DAS.
During hot days occasionally it will still do this.
it seems to happen to my wife's car as well after sitting in the hot CA sun all day at her work parking lot. Waiting for my buddy to come over with his scanner.
Hi kschiu - if it were the CPS, would it be giving a code? I have the same problem but mine is year round (in Connecticut) . I replaced the starter - seemed to help for a few months then it re-appeared. Just changed the start relay - not it. Battery is just over 5 years old so that's next.

Have you figure this out yet? Starter, cps, relay, no go! But if I jump the relay she comes straight to life.
update: I was having same issues where when extra hot outside and car directly under the sun the car wouldn’t want to start. I would turn the key normal and all I heard was a quick grunt as if the starter wanted to ignite but it wouldn’t do anything after that, the car wouldn’t turn over. Split second grunt.
I would continue to do this about two three sometimes only two times before the car actually start. I would say I’d wait at the most 30-45 seconds in between.
This became more frequent. I would stop at the store for 15min, come back to the car and it would stall again. Same symptoms, car grunts but will not turn over. Waited 30-40 seconds and tried again until it will actually start.
just replaced the CPS last night. Never had a problem starting the car at 5am since the engine is cool so I traveled 13 highway miles and stoped at a gas station to pump gas. Engine is hot by then, pumped gas, went back in the car and the car had no problem turning on.
I noticed my CPS was original Mercedes: W211 e500 4M with 155k.
My car will sit in the sun for about 7hrs today I’ll report back to see if CPS was the issue (which most likely seems to be).
*I know my comment doesn’t directly help with above thread issue but the car symptoms are very similar I’d like to share my experience to help the next high mileage W211.
Best

After replacing original CPS and CSS my car starts up with no problem. Nonetheless the issue of it not starting at times (hearing only the CLICK after I turn the key) still occurs only when I leave the key in the car on position 1 or 2 and some of the modules/lights stay on, example is when I pump gas.
It's due to CODE 9001 Under Voltage Supply. Anyone know why this is? Corrosion in the wires?
Cheers
