European plates?

Anyone know if the european license plates are legal in the state od California? And how to get one? I've seen someone driving around with it before.

We've had some discussions on the subject of front license plate requirements here, although you wouldn't know that if you just joined. In brief, California requires an official California plate in the front. You may get away with displaying no plate, or a foreign plate, for a while, but you may eventually get a fixit-ticket for your troubles.

You can use the "search" function of this board to see if a particular topic has been discussed in the past.

I'm not exactly local to Riverside now, but it's my home town - Poly High '65, UCR '69. Haven't lived there for thirty years, though.

What you probably saw was a European delivery vehicle which still had the tourist plates on. Either that, or a US forces vehicle which still had the plates from whichever country it was imported from. Most states require that a vehicle be registered and tagged in that state within a certain number of days after being brought into that state.

Within 30 days in NY. (Not that I've ever seen a Corvette with a front plate on it!)

I still have mine on the back.

(Those that know me are familiar with my penchant for running with no plate on the vehicle.)

Don't park it in DC. I didn't realize that my front Virginia plate had fallen off until I got a $40 ticket from DC parking enforcement. They'll also nail you for an expired inspection sticker or county decal.

Ditto in VA. It's perfectly legal to drive with the non-US plates though, within that 30 day window, as long as they have not expired.

I went for a long time once with a set also - but those were six month tourist plates. I think that you're pretty safe as long as you don't get pulled over for something else. I'm even surprised at the number of cars I see with no plates at all -- but I think that's playing with fire.

European front plates

Here in good ol' Oklahoma, we can have anything we want on the front. I bought my German plate from a website (did a search for german plates). Looks great on my CL500!

I assumed that he wanted Euro plates to put on both front and rear in lieu of US ones. Heck, if he wants a Euro plate for the front, I probably still have one of my old ones in the garage somewhere which I could sell him.
