Question european front license plate

Does anyone know where I can get a European license plate for my new E320 CDI? Also, if there are any instructions on how to install it would be helpful too. Thanks in advance!

Hi,
you need a European plate holder, which will replace the US holder. At least for a Brillant Silver, Part # is A 211 885 07 81 - they once were color coded, today I guess they're all black. If you look under the bumper you can see the two holes where your holder is is mounted. There should be 2 more holes (to left and right). This is where the replacement holder will be mounted. You then simply need to drill 2 screws into the bumper through the holder mounting holes. Then get a license plate and a frame and you will be good to go.

Please don't install the plate without a frame, looks like sh..

I had several plates from Munich and Bad Tölz but I already sold them on eBay. I still have a frame, but without any advertisement on it. If interested, let me know!

Well, maybe you can help me with a question. I’m ordering an E320 for European Delivery. My dealer has already warned me that a front license plate (European) will be affixed at the delivery center. Is this installed by drilling through the face of the bumper or from underneath? The dealer may have some control if they request that the MB Vehicle Processing Center in JAX not drill the front of the bumper for US holder, if it’s not already done.

Thanks for the help.

Mortenstein, you are talking about the front bumper (plate), correct? Just wanted to be sure. I forgot if in Europe they put plates on front and back or just front. Anyway, thanks for the info. How do I order one with the part # you provided? Thank you again. It doesn't sound difficult to do.

Actually, I cannot help you here! If (assumed) they mount a European Plate (German Customs Plate??) I also assume they will use the US plate holder, and simply drill holes there since they are later covered by the US plate.

The holder itself is mounted with 2 "hocks" that go in the holes already moulded into the bumper (just look under it). Then it will be held in place by 2 screws. Please look here and you can see the 2 screws that go through the plate holder into the bumper. Please remember... once you used the screws for the European holder and want to go back to the US holder, the holes will be visible and you have to fix them!

If you need photos on this, let me know, I can mail them! I have a Euro E-220CDI in Texas and wanted to have a perfect look with the Texas plate. So I replaced my European holder with a US holder, filled the holes and used touch up paint to cover them. Not perfect, but when I get back to Germany, the old holes will be used again anyways.

Yepp, front holder. For the rear you need to replace the lower part of the trunc - not 100% sure but I think the area for the plate is not that wide in the US.

Talk to your loocal dealer about the part #. They should find it in their system or at least find somebody who can call Germany. If your dealer cannot help, let me know. I have no use for my brillant silver German plate holder at the moment and can buy a new one when I go back there.

Installation takes about 40 seconds. Simply take out 2 screws from the US holder, take it off, put the German holder into the holes under the bumper (please check your bumper first - I have a Euro bumper and this one had holes for the US holder) and attach with the 2 screws to hold the German holder in place. Then use a universal Euro plate frame to hold the plate in place. If you need pictures, let me know.

Thanks, Mortenstein. If you have pics of the screw holes you are referring to that would be great. It sounds pretty easy to do. Now I need to make my purchase. My car is Brilliant Silver. MB dealers can sell me the brilliant silver mounting plate? I appreciate your information. Best.

HI,
please give me your email address for the photo...

... and take a look under the bumper. You will see how the US holder is attached, make sure there are two square holes a little bit further to the outside, otherwise the Euro holder will not fit unless you use more screws.

Guys, in my office most of the top guys all drive German cars MB or BMW's. One guy decided to get us all customized European style license plates for the front. I was playing around with it this morning and did notice the little holes under the bumper but also noticed that the holder did not lighn up with the holes on the bumper. I would like to see some pics of this because I am thinking that he ordered the wrong holder for my particular car.

Thanks

US cars and German cars have different bumbers. Totally different back end piece, the part where the license plate goes. Good chance your European plate holder won't fit right on your car. I have a US spec BMW and MB and live in Germany, the European plates don't fit on either car.
