DIY Engine replacement

I am about to embark on an engine replacement for a 2006 E350 that has a dead cylinder. I’ve got a unit from a 2007 that does not have the balance shaft issue. Are you guys aware of any write ups or videos? What about anything I should take care of while in there? It has 170k miles, I plan on keeping it for 18 months or so.

I did find this thread which appears to have the write ups. Anything else I should know? https://www.benzworld.org/threads/20...eeded.2907890/
Thanks in advance.

Engine is out. Thanks for the info I was able to get the engine out with few hitches. Only things of note...needed to lift the engine partway to get at the A/C compressor bolts. Also after the A/C step I stopped looking at the instructions and missed the transmission cooler lines and the ground strap for the starter. After freeing those I was off to the races.

Little time lapse of the lift:

Great job! How many hours of work from backing it into the garage until engine out? Not counting breaks, trips to the parts shop, etc.

You could open the hood 90deg to the service position to get the engine out easier.

Nice work. I'll be swapping my 190k mile 3.2 for a 60k mile 3.7 soon.

Great job, I can only admire the work you have done as I myself lack the resources and skill to do it on my own! On another note, can you confirm if cdi engines could be swapped with gasoline engines? With the diminishing of diesel engine, i was thinking when time of my diesel engine come i could swap it with a petrol engine, is it s straight fit?

I backed it in Saturday and had it out by Tuesday. Really just working Saturday and Tuesday evening. Maybe 4 hours or so. I studied the instructions a lot beforehand and invested in air tools which has really cut down the wrenching time.

honestly I couldn’t believe how easy it turned out to be. This is my first time doing something like this and Mercedes made it easy on me. I am coming off from spending weeks and lots of swear words on the electronic parking brake module and rear brakes of an LR3. I could have done 3 more mercedes engines before I got the darned Rover right.

the real challenge will be getting it all back together and in. I got new accessory pulleys, water pump, p/s Reservoir (broke the old one on extraction, oops), Coolant hoses and motor mounts to put on, which is dead simple with the motor out. Will need a helper to align everything and not smash the trans lines I think.

not sure. I imagine the mounts are similar but the real challenge will be to keep the computers happy.

Yesterday I swapped all the accessories to the new engine out of an 07 and there is one difference.

On my 06 engine there is an electrical wire going to the power steering pump, branching from the wire going to the a/c compressor. The 07 engines wiring harness does not have it. Any idea what this wire is for and will the car get mad without it?

I think the wire might be for parameter steering (variable assist. Did the two power steering pumps look the same? I would keep all the accessories and wires from your old engine.

i agree pretty sure it’s for variable steering. This new engine doesn’t have it in the harness and the pump is swapped from the old engine as the new engine didn’t come with one. Will a pump run okay without being plugged in?

Success!!!

I ended up swapping harnesses after I got the new engine in, so I still had parameter steering support. This requires removing the intake manifold to get after a couple sensors underneath it. In addition, couldn’t get to the starter ground easily so I just cut the wire and soldered/heat shrinked it back. Glad I ended up doing it as the old engine had a brand new intake manifold, so swapped that too.

Here’s a video of my first test fire. First it was misfiring like the old engine and my heart sank for a split second, then it started purring!

I plan on giving it a transmission and rear diff fluid service and this thing should be ready for action again.
