You can probably use a borescope through the access cover to see what color you have.

Also in addition to the balance shaft, the intake manifold tends to go on the M272 engine. Basically the flaps gets gummed up when the oil separator/oil breather cover goes bad. I'd replace those. Intake is at least $600+ for the intake and 1k+ at the dealer. Goes in the same range, 80-140k. You should it scanned because you can get a pending code before an actual CEL on the intake flap.

This is a good point. Also the ECU is mounted on top of the engine so it's exposed to the same heat and vibration as the engine. Once in a while the ECU can fail in expensive ways.
