Scratched a rim - What to do now...

I feel like an idiot because I am usually a great driver but yesterday I scratched my rim on a curb. It is scratched in a couple of places and is somewhat deep in one spot. Is there any way to get this out? Also, does the spare in the E (with the appearance package) come with another rim? If not, where can I buy another rim cheap and how much would you guess that it would cost?

Thanks!

I had a blow out that roughed up the wheel pretty good. My service advisor gave me the number of the place they use to re-turn wheels. I went there and they said the wheel was not bent so they could fix it. It looked like a new wheel when they finished. I paid $125.

If it is a painted rim, such as the OEM, those can be filled and painted pretty easily. I had this done on one of my Porsche rims, and you can't even tell. If the rim is polished, I'm not sure what they do, but I heard they can be fixed. Someone here will know.

Lux, I thought you had bought a rim warranty with your car.. (I may be mistaken).

What is a rim warranty? Did it come standard with the car or was it extra?

Is this a chain company? $125 doesn't seem too bad at all if it looks new!

Unfortunately, no, it's a local business. There were a lot of vehicles there with nice wheels, though! I'd call your local dealer and ask if they have a 3rd party to whom they regularly outsouce.

New Factory Wheel at $149

Here's an OEM MB wheel. The starting bid is $149 and this hasn't drawn a beginning bid on the last couple of tries:

Good luck!

I do recall someone having a rim warranty, but I can't recally who it was?

The dealership, or a bodyshop, would have contacts on who does this. Usually, they travel around from dealership to dealership to have this done.

If it's the usual minor abrasion around the rim of the wheel caused by a curb (usually on the right rear wheel) you can sand out most/all of the damage yourself. The alloy, at least on the OEM wheels, is soft. Your results probably won't be as nice as a professional's results, so it's a question of how much you want to spend to restore the original appearance. Filling a deeper gouge probably doesn't lend itself to home remedy.

I use a very fine grit of sandpaper, followed by rubbing compound and polyurethane sealer to somewhat replicate the appearance of the OEM coating on the wheel.

Does anyone know if the spare tire on the appearance package is a full size 5 star rim and standard tire? I tried to peek yesterday but I can't seem to get the cover off very easily.

I did some homework and found a company that will fix the rim for $100 but I also have to replace the tire due to a small gouge which should increase the bill.

By the way, I did some research on this tire. The Michelin, Pilot Primacy Size:245/45WR17 is $222 on tirerack. I did some caparisons
(Michelin Pilot Sport, Michelin Pilot Sport A/S) which are Michelin's around the same price and these tires are terrible! The wear was 5.3 out of 10! How long would you guess before I will need to replace the tires???

If you are handy, you can fix this yourself. Almost all the German painted wheels can be smoothed out and sprayed with Wurth brand silver wheel paint and the Wurth clear. It is a dead on match to the BMW/AUDI/MB/Porsche silver wheel paint. Filler may be needed for deep gouges. I have done it for cosmetic repair and unless you are looking for it real closely, you would not find it. I can attach a link on the procedure if you need it.

I scratched my Carlsson 1/6 Evo and was wondering, toy collector, if I can fix it myself? I also hit a curb >_< -- but my lips were machined polish... would it matter if I use your procedure?

Machine polish edges takes it to a whole new level especially if they are a special alloy. Procedure is for fully painted wheels only.

Thanks for the offer but I don't think I will attempt this on my car (I would on my wife's car). The guy that is doing it is only charging $100 so it isn't bad.

I got a rim warranty when I purchased my E500 at Autohaus FL. They replaced one Rim & Tire a month ago when I ran over a curb (told them I hit a pothole....seems that it only covers road hazard and scraping a curb isnt) and I had a nail in one tire also. Paid less than $300 bucks for plan and it has already paid for itself. I was going to go to good rim repair shop unitl i remember I had that plan.

Easy fix....EBAY!!!

This is where EBAY is great.

There are so many people that buy a new benz and IMMEDIATELY take off brand new wheels and sell them. They want spinning chrome and all that BLING BLING!!!

If you have to buy a set of 4, just buy them and as you beat up more wheels you can keep putting on new ones. The beauty of it is, soon you have a set of "winter" wheels.

I have a Suburban, bought a set of 17" H2 Hummer wheels for $500....direct bolt-on swap... on EBAY....with BRAND NEW BFG ALL-TERRAINS!!! Just STOCK tires cost more than $500, plus I had a set of studded snow tires put on the stock wheels.

I had my 18" wheels polished but they cannot be recovered as before.
The best way is to replace the new ones if you really cannot tolerate any defects on /in your car.

Fixing Wheel Scratches/Scrapes
Would this work for the appearance package wheels? I am such a dummy, this past weekend I scraped another wheel so I better learn how to do it myself.
