Talking My New 2005 E500, and a Couple Questions

  1. Is there a way to turn off the sound system and keep the nav. map displayed?
  2. Should I subscrive to Teleaid? Since the car is "pre-owned", it is not active.

Can't help you on the nav question, but on the Teleaid, approach it as if it was optional insurance, which in a sense it is. Consider:

1. Who drives the car - only very self-reliant people, or somebody who you want to have quick access to help if something goes wrong?

2. Where and when it is driven, and when - late at night, and/or parts of town where the driver wouldn't necessarily want to leave the car in case of trouble?

3. Whether you also have Auto Club service.

4. Your personal sense of the car's reliability.

5. Whether Teleaid will enable the driver to dispense with a cell phone subscription they might otherwise have for "emergency" use; that might offset the substantial ($240/year) cost of Teleaid after the first year. Incidentally, depending upon how old the car is, there might be some of the free first year left.

6. Whether you would use any of the "info" service; if you have nav then you probably won't be asking the info service for directions, which could get expensive in any case.

7. Whether your insurance company will give you a rate break for having a theft locator system active.

... and that's just for starters. I renewed Teleaid after the free first year because my wife is the primary driver and she declines to carry a cell phone; every situation is different and so only you can decide whether it's worth it.

Oh, and three blue thumbs up!

... my California vote won't change the result; make sure your Florida vote gets counted.

Thanks for asking the question about the sound and the nav/map. I've had my car for 3 weeks and have yet to figure this out. As far as I can tell, the only way to get rid of the radio sound while using the NAV or map is to hit mute, but it seems like there ought to be another way. I hope someone else has the answer. As for Teleaid, I had it on my previous car (C320) and will continue to use it on this one, but then I'm a single woman and like the additional feeling of security it offers.

Great car!! You should burn that sign.

Shouldn't liberalazis donate to the poor or something instead of buying such an extravagantly expensive and unreasonalby unecessary luxury automobile while others are starving and without shelter???

Money in one place, mouth in another.

BTW--I dig the brilliant silver awesome color!

Nice ride!

From a financial perspective, can you afford to spend $.65 a day? Or $20 a month? If so, then go with Teleaid. The benefits are worth the financial cost.

In my case I select telephone, then hit the map button. Not sure you have the phone option on your Command.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. You want to hear absolutely nothing other than your nav? If that is what you are asking then one of these two ways:

A) While the radio (or any other audio other than Nav voice) is audible, hit Mute.

B) While the radio (or any other audio other than Nav voice) is audible, decrease volume to preferred level (even silent).

C) Select Aux, then Map

I know B and C will work. I haven't tried A. Each audio device is independent. The volume controls work for the particular audio device that is outputting sound at time of change. For example, if change the volume while the Nav voice speaks, you would change the volume only for the Nav voice while whatever audio device is active (radio, CD, CDC) remains the same. This is also true vice-versa.

The Aux button works, but you would think there would be an off "soft key" for the sound system. I would like to display the map without turning on the radio or CD.

When I called MB, they suggested the mute button or turning down the volume.

Thanks for the suggestions.

On the other hand, it seems that ***** size is being discussed in this camp. Way to go Colon!

Don't get me wrong, I don't object to anyone expressing their opinions but we have the 'Off Topic' forum for that. I have some pretty strong opinions about the election myself. But, all too often, some of the kiddies start flaming each other, the thread gets high-jacked, and a moderator has to shut it down. Most of us are mature enough to have some fun without it getting personal but some of the immature posters will get on if we give them an opening and ruin it.

Actually, I just see it as being rude and imposing. When people browse this forum, they want to see posts regarding W211, not brash political opinion. This web site does have a forum for that -- the Off Topic forum. I am there often debating political ideology. If you like, I will meet you there.

There is a time and place for everything. Why not be considerate of others?

Congrats on the car. I'd say Teleaid isn't worth it.

Whichever one is available (1 of 5)
I say get Tele Aid for insurance. Beautiful car, for God's sake get rid of that yard sign, otherwise you have to sell your toy to feed the less priviledged and the hungry.

Lightbulb Thanks for the responses & support

I will ask the dealer about SOS still working. I had a Lexus for a year and never used Lexus Link (OnStar). I get a busy signal every time I hit the i button. I will probably subscribe.

I am enjoying the E500--even more than I expected.

Happy you can afford such a car in such a bad economy . I see little value in Tele-Aid if you have NAV and a cell phone.

Yeah, but did you read about how he is ONLY fueling it with B100 biodiesel?!

I am enough of a chemist that I'm genuinely interested in how well biodiesel works, but I'd probably be using B2 (2% biodiesel/98% petroleum).

I wonder how many injector pumps and seals he will go through in the first 5 years?
