Can Voice Navigation Instruction be Turned Off?

So we are driving along, listening to the sat radio, as the map scrolls through our trip. Then BAM! Helga, the voice of the navigation system chimes in with her instruction. Gone is the music. Instead is the long and detailed "stay left on rt 9 and then turn on to US78".

Now we love our navigation system (more or less), however we also like our music. Is there a way to keep the nav on without voice instructions? With just visual instructions?

Thanks,

David

I think you hit the mute button while Helga is speaking. I'll check the Comand manual tonight and confirm

So hitting the mute will silence Helga and bring back the music?

That would be useful, however I would like just to turn if off and not interrupt every direction. In NY, these instructions can come fast and furious.

yes, press and hold the button while she speaks; it will mute her voice only (music stays).

I can turn Helga off completely in the main menu of the navigation. I can not tell you where it is, but it is there. Somewhere where the fading settings are.

I had to turn it off because sometimes I have problems being told where to go , especialy if it is coming from a female :v

Just a stupid joke here,

Steve A.

While navigating, the Mute button serves 2 functions. It can mute the audio function or it can just mute the Nav. As stated earlier, while Helga is speaking (you can press the Repeat Button to get her to speak) you press and hold Mute. In a moment, you'll get a screen indicating that Nav Mute is on. If you want her back, press Repeat. The Nav Mute is reset when you start a new Route Nav, or when you restart the car. Hope that helps.

You can also adjust how much fade she starts up with so as to not interrupt your music enjoyment too much.

You can adjust the volume separately for the phone/radio/nav/satellite, etc...
While you are receiving a Nav instruction, lower the volume on the head unit, then press repeat to be sure the nav volume is the way you lile it. If the radio was playing before the nav instruction came on, it will still be at the same volume level as before. Only the nav volume will be lower.

I think if you hit NAV, then the Settings softbutton there will be a Volume softbutton on the right side that appears. You'll have the option to choose the "Fade" amount which will determine how much Helga will drown out your music.

I was on the hands free phone and Helga was telling me to do something and I talked back to her. My girlfriend (who had kind of a bad cell connection and had not seen or heard the NAV system) immediately demanded to know who I picked up with my new Benz! I pretended that it was no one, this got her even more angry!

When she finally saw my car, I showed her how the NAV system worked and introduced Helga to her. I might have temporarily saved my relationship.

I thought this was funny (not to my girlfriend),

I was on the way to my tennis match at a new location. I had the navigation on, when my wife called me. Helga announced "Next turn, 200ft." My wife asked me who was that to tell me to turn left. She wanted to know if I was really going to a tennis match? It took a while to convice my wife that the sexy Helga was holding my glass of wine while reading the route map for me.
