Glove Box Shelf

I just got my E320CDI and noticed rails inside the glove box. A search of the forum revealed that the early cars were shipped with a removable shelf. Somewhere along the line it looks like the shelf was deleted and I certainly didn't get one but would like to have one. I tried to find the part number to order one at the dealer but couldn't find it. Anybody have the part number for the shelf?

Mine has a shelf.

Check out some new cars at the dealer and see if they have a shelf.

If they do, tell your salesman you want a shelf out of one the the cars in stock and they can order one to replace it.

The shelf is nice. It has chrome trim on it and looks great when you open the door.

The only problem with the glove box is that the light does not come on unless the car is running and usally I am not in there if the car is running.. It should come on if the key is in the ignition.

It is very easy to make the shelf if you have tools to cut the wood. I made mine out of 1/4" Masonite. The main thing is to make a good pattern since the sides aren't parallel and you need to cut out the right rear portion to fit the rear wall. I painted minblack.

The deleted the glove box shelf? They ... deleted ... the ... GLOVE ... BOX ... SHELF ????? It's nothing but a freakin' piece of PLASTIC with some felt stuck to the top. It must cost all of 25 cents American to make.

OK. Calm down. Deeeeeeep breathing. Ah, much better. The shelf in my '03 has the following numbers stamped on it:

211 689 01 30
211 689 03 30
WZ-Nr. T0013773

Maybe one of those is the part number.

Yeah, 04's and above lost the shelf. Makes the glove box not too useful.

No freaken shelf? I am throwing rotten eggs at the next Maybach I see!

What bother me is that they have a pen clip on the door but when you place a pen there, it catches any larger articles. Does anyone really examine what these half bright engineers design? Is common sense a thing of the past?

The dealer says $6.00 and it's a stocked item. There must be decent demand for these.

My '03 has the shelf. Nice item. Makes the compartment more user friendly. Spend the $6.

The 03 30 part number is for Elegance/Avantgarde models and has a chrome strip on the front.

I was thinking that the glove compartment looked unusually tall.

Hey, I'd like to get that shelf too. But, my dealer says he can't see 211 689 01 30 in his parts computer. He sees 211 680 01 30. It looks like a shelf. But it's US$39! Not sure that's what you guys are referring to. Can anyone help me out on this?

According to a parts layout, 211 689 03 30 seems to be the plastic piece that holds the lock for the glove box. The parts guy doesn't see 211 689 01 30. But his info show a part number of 211 680 01 30 as the shelf. Does anyone have different information? I'd rather get this plastic shelf for 6 bucks, than 39.95.

I'm pretty sure that I correctly copied the numbers embossed on the shelf from my car, but the ol' eyes aren't what they used to be. Can somebody else with a shelf in their glove box pull theirs out (it's not very tight) and confirm the numbers? Thanks.

Over the weekend I looked at the shelf in a used 2003 E500 at my dealer. It had the same two part numbers previously mentioned: 211 689 01 30 and 211 689 03 30. The explanation as to why one part had two part numbers on it is that one part number is for a plain shelf and the other one for the shelf with chrome trim. That makes sense.

The dealer searched the part numbers and said the fiirst (01 03) was not valid and the second (03 30) was valid and available but shown as a part grouped with the center console not the glove box. They've ordered this part so that I can see it. May be here at the end of the week.

Looking at the glove box exploded view drawing did not show a shelf although there is an "intermediate bottom" A211 680 03 30 that is a possiblity. But, for whatever it means, the shelf I had in my hand had the 211 689 part numbers molded into it.

So .....it would be great if anybody can confirm the correct part number for the shelf.

In most cases of discrepencies, the part numbers in the parts system are incorrect. In this case, the part number molded on the part is incorrect. I checked one on the shelf (no pun intended) and it also had the incorrect part number.

A 211 680 01 30 INTERMEDIATE FLOOR €23
A 211 680 03 30 INTERMEDIATE FLOOR €23 <- with chrome strip

A 211 689 01 30 CAP FOR CONTROL BLOCK €4
A 211 689 03 30 CAP BELOW STORAGE COMPARTMENT €5

The first 689 number must be ordered with a color code, or else it is invalid. I used 7241 (anthracite). CAP FOR CONTROL BLOCK means the cover over the lock.

The second 689 number is part of the center console... it comes with another part normally but is separately replaceable.

Regardless what partnumber is valid for the shelf...the reason for the 2 partnumbers is that ONE comes with a chrome strip for the avantgarde (sport in the US) and elegance (standard in the US) models and the other one comes with a black strip for the classics in the rest of the world...

greetingz,

greetingz,
And according to the parts system, the US only gets the non-chrome strip one. To save on costs? I don't know, but the price on both parts is the same! But I thought I saw some US cars with the chrome strip version.

P.S. we do have some in stock with chrome strips, and can always order more.
