W211 steering wheel retrofit install

Was working on a little project this weekend
This is for 03-04 E-class clockspring updates to facelift decided to make a full write up, there are a few threads outlining the job already but the information is scattered throughout a couple pages. Iv consolidated it all here
Parts needed:
Wiring harness part 2114404509 (can be purchased at dealer)
Clockspring 2005+ (eBay)

Old Connector (OG):
Pin1 airbag
Pin2 airbag
Pin3 airbag
Pin4 airbag
Pin5 (not used in swap)
Pin6 (not used in swap)
Pin7 blank (not used)
Pin8
Pin9
Pin10
Pin11
Pin12
Pin13
Pin14 blank (not used)

New Connector:
Pin1 blank (steering wheel heat) (not used)
Pin2 blank (steering wheel heat) (not used)
Pin3 airbag (Pin2 OG)
Pin4 airbag(Pin1 OG)
Pin5 airbag (Pin4 OG)
Pin6 airbag (Pin3 OG)
Pin7 (not used)
Pin8 match to OG
Pin9 match to OG
Pin10 match to OG
Pin11 match to OG
Pin12 match to OG
Pin13 match to OG
Pin14 (not used)

Edit:
This swap is for users who want a facelift wheel, example e55 swapped to e63/cls55 wheel
The 2020 wheel is my personal touch

Reason for the swap is I’ll be doing some product testing of a w205 swap but worst case I’ll just rock a 2020 wheel

I’m not responsible if anything gets damaged. Use diy at your own risk

Edit: I don’t know if something like this will work for sl55. If I find someone who wants to dive in maybe we can get something going but it’s a long shot

some programming maybe involved for paddles; I haven’t run into this personally just from what others have said

If anyone wants a wheel made for their w211/w219 feel free to visit

wow didn't think a steering wheel from a much newer model would fit the W211 that easily! usually splines differ and obviously wiring but you did it!

my #1 worry is if the airbag would still work, but that's a 1-time, very expensive test so i understand. certain other OEM airbags changed from single stage to dual stage so i'm unfamiliar if this was done with MB over the years too.

spline needs to be modified but that’s very easy to do. Need a marker and an angle grinder.

as for the airbag deploying. Unfortunately it’s been tested when the first retrofitted car was in an accident and all the bags deployed

I am in the process of upgrading my clockspring on my 2004 e55 and the female connector on the clockspring for the paddle shifters is a different size. Do I need a different wiring harness to connect the paddle shifters? The female plug on the new clockspring is larger and for a different plug.

I was putting in an updated steering wheel from a w212 with the harness and airbag. I also picked up the module for the newer shift paddles - I am not sure I wired those properly either. I attached photos - can you take a look and provide any guidance? I appreciate the help.
The white plug is different from the female connector on the clockspring. I did also purchase an updated steering column piece that houses the clockspring.

This is the updated closkspring I bought. One of the used steering column housing with the cloaking was broken so I bought a new clockspring

the write up I have is updating a w211 prefaclift steering column to a facelift. You’re trying to retrofit a much newer setup. Totally different
I doubt my wiring instruction will work with that.
maybe start by pulling up the schematics for w211 clockspring wiring and w212 to make you’re custom wiring harness
good luck

with the swap in my post you can do install a w211 facelift wheel

the 2020 wheel I have in there fits after coding and modifying the wheel itself on w211 steering column parts.

I have a 2006 E500 with an old cracked leather steering wheel, got a much better one with wood. Went to remove the old one and looks like there’re no screws in those wells on the side of the steering wheel.
Do I just pry the airbag out?

I looked at the steering wheel I was going to install in place of the old one in the car and figured it out!
The screws are deeper in those holes and concealed, they are integrated into the steering wheel and don’t come out! Silly me!
