World Navigation DVD?

Hi,
I have a car with COMAND + Navigation in India. Apparently there are no navigation data/disks available for India (Its a developing country and GPS stuff isnt taken seriously due to unplanned growth etc).

Right now I have no disk in Navigation drive and clicking on NAV or MAP says "Insert Navigation Disk". I want to know if there is some kind of navigation disk that can atleast display a world map with a blip showing me moving?

Or.. What would happen if I inserted a US navigation disk? Can anyone with Navigation let me know what happens if you go out of the coverage area? What kind of information does COMAND display? Can you please take some pictures (I would really appreciate it if you could do this).

Thanks!

Regards,

All of the street names, map pictures that the nav displays are on the DVD. My guess is if you inserted a US DVD all you would get is an arrow on the screen pointing to the general direction of the US. Its like when we are "off road" thats the arrow we get & then the display pointer appears on the map location we are in when the GPS gives the matching coodinates for the map info on the DVD.

The world is too big a place to have on 1 DVD, and if there were a portion of the world that displayed where you are, it would be zoomed out so far, that your motion would be unnoticeable as you drove. For us in the US to see us "move" on the map we have to zoom in. The more motion you want to see, the more you have to zoom in (up to .5 mile).

Why not just pop a movie into the single dvd slot?

Hi Barry,
I know the world is too big a place, All I wanted was some kind of activity showing the country in the map with some activity. Perhaps Latitude or Longitude but I guess I am asking for too much here.

Will just use the DVD for Movies as I have a Euro SPEC Car.

There are many DVD companies that make NAV maps. Perhaps it's worth contacting them. Garmin is one of them that come to mind. You KNOW that MB doesn't burn their own maps. That stuff is acquired from a vendor.

Sorry, but there is no way that a non-MB DVD will work in an E-class. The MB maps are made by Navteq, and the COMAND is operated by MB’s own OS that is burned into the DVD

I can indeed confirm Oslo's remark. My Pioneer DVD Navigation system is wrote by the same company as the Mercedes-Benz software, but the Pioneer disk is not recognized in the Mercedes-Benz and likewise with the Mercedes-Benz DVD, that is not recognized in the Pioneer.

John
