Winter replicas

Ok, I'm going to get my car very soon, and it's probaly a good idea to get a pair winter wheels.

Firstly I was planing to get a MB setup, basically it's the 'elegance' wheels in 17" that the dealer offers the price is 19.000 SEK (US$2.800). They are 245 wide.

I then found on the swedish equivalent of eBay a set of new 18" AMG style replicas with really good winter tires on them for a bit cheaper 16.500 SEK (US$2.350). They are 245 wide and 18" looks nice. For some odd reason they are called "Hunter 18".

My question is, is it ok to run with replicas or is it better to suffer in terms of look and play it safe and go with ugly MB winters?

Stay with the MB wheels. If you are that concerned about winter conditions then you should have purchased a 4 Matic version.

I know the difference between 2wd and 4wd cars, that wasn't the question.

I'm very used to drive rwd cars in winter conditions, and I think it's more important to have a good set of snow tires than 4wd. It's not only about being able to gain speed, it's more about being able to stop.

I don't see any reason not to buy them. In fact, I wanna do the same for my 4matic, but I want it not for winter...I just wanna put wider tires.

Good luck

As long as you can live with the look then go for it. But if you have wheels you think are ugly for 5 months a year you'll probably be less enthusiastic about a car you just spent a ton of dough on. The price delta isn't enough to make you live with something you think is ugly.

Another obvious point is you can just have them take the all season/summer tires off the rims and put the winters on and keep the summer tires in your garage all winter. yes you'll spend some cash taking them on/off but its gonna take a while before you break even on the new wheels

MY understanding is 4WD/AWD is quite rare in europe and its very common to rely on RWD, and further most people do fine with it (with good snow tires) Am I correct on this?

For me I live in USA/NY but have 4matic and am going with the all seasons. Previous car (BMW650i) I took the tires off the front/kept same rim but had separate matching rims for the back (needed a narrower wheel)

Yepp that's very true. We also have laws which makes your insurance invalid and also the police will stop you if you don't have proper winter tires during winter season. And 'all season' tires are not accepted as winter tires here either you have 4wd or not.

The idea about using the summer wheels as winter wheels is interesting, but I'm a little afraid that the salt, dirt and tar from the winter roads will damage them.

I think the 18" AMG replicas looks nice, I just wanted to hear your opinions. I'm more a BMW man and I can really easy spot if someone has M5 replicas, is it the same here around MB specialists?

I wouldn't buy any replica wheels because I think it's one of the most important parts when it comes to safety.
I have zero problem with buying replica bumpers, spoilers, diffusers, etc but not rims or engine parts...
