Thumbs down W212 Round Fog Lamps

My W212 does not have the hocky-stick LED on the front but 2 round lamps on each side below the front bumper (A total of 4 round lamps, I think 2 of them are fog lamps). When I turn on the Fog Lamp function, only one of the round lamps on each side would lit. Does anyone know what the function is for the other 2 round lamps? Or how to turn them on? (I have tried all functions incl. daytime driving lamps, turn lamps...etc.)

Try daytime running lights at daylight, you should find which lights come on.

Two are DRL's and two are fogs.
I found a business with a plate glass window down to ground and turned on all my light functions to see what they look like.
In my E350, you cannot turn on both DRL's and fogs because the headlights have to be on to turn on the fogs and this turns off the DRL's.

Yes it is a Govt Rule (something like no more than 6 lights can be turned on in the of the front of a vehicle (unless it is an emergency vehicle)).

I turned on the daytime running light function and the dipped-beam headlamps come on (the ones next to main-beam).

Could the round lamps be turning lamps or cornering lamps?

cornering lamps in my e550 w/ the hockey sticks are built into the headlight assembly in the interior side of the main headlight housing. Guess that's a weak description but hopefully you get the point.

The inside pair of lights are fog lamps which are actived by pulling the h/l switch out to the first detent position. The outside pair are absolutely DRL which are acitvated via the instrument cluster. Turning lights are only with the Bi-Xenon lights and this light comes from the inside corner of the main headlamp unit.

Weird..When I activated the DRL function via the instrument cluster, the inside pair of headlights (the diamond shape ones) went on. I wonder if anyone with the same model could show me a photo of his/her DRL goes on?

Where are you located? Are you having the light switch in 'A'-mode?

I have those led-lights and cannot test the same. Perhaps I could test if those inner lights come on somehow alone (that should be the case with parking lights only on).

I wonder if someone could make a quick call to a dealership and get the answers?

Is it possible to change the round fog lights to L shape LED DRLs?

Any chance that those lights could be forbidden in South Africa and the car would be coded differently than for other markets (instead of just incorrect coding for your car, obviously your car is not behaving like others that we know of)? How do other W212 cars behave and what about those with LEDs?

This is the xxth email I got from the excellent, speedy MB Customer Service. For a simple question, wasted so many days, still gets no simple answer.

At least this forum is more friendly. At first email, I gave them my VIN, then there came the second email asked for Reg #, I gave them my no. in S. Af which makes no sense in UK, then they sent the same email again which drove me nuts,,,,,

I can only speak for my E350 USA model with P1 package (four round lights). If I enable the DRL's, and it is normal daylight, only the DRL's come on. However, enabling the DRL's also turns on the sensor for the head and tail lights even if switch is in "O" position rather than "A".
Therefore, when light level drops to a certain level, the head and tail lights come on. Guess this is so people will not try to drive with just DRL's. My lights come on every time I drive into a garage.
BTW, I have had great service from MB USA in answering my quetions, but sometimes takes several days. All they need is VIN (so far).

Thanks for the great clarification. So, just a separate question: Do you enjoy having the 4 round lamps so far or you regretted not getting the L-shaped LEDs in the first place?

Very much prefer the four round ones over the L shaped/hockey stick ones. To me, it is a more "classic" look, which is another reason why I got the Luxury version. It has different shape to the bumper cover and a different grill.
Also, the L shape only comes with the P2 package and there were several things with it I did not want for the price M-B charges.

Since you can't have xenon and the four round fogs they are a big no-no to me. A car in this segment must have xenons.

Now, really.

The LEDs come in a package with HID versus halogen main lighting, and preferences in that respect are signficant while "opinions" regarding leds vs 4 round lights are solely asthetic, as there's no lighting that you'll ever notice from the driver's seat. Is it really just about "looks?"
