I agree it's an irritating place to put it. It seems to me that putting it somewhere in the center console would make more sense, but perhaps someone will chime in with a good reason for its current placement.

On a sidenote, once you have all your contacts loaded up and bluetooth streaming working, there shouldn't be much need to take it out of your pocket, unless you need to charge it.

ther is no good reason. It was just a thoughless/dumb/lazy move by Mercedes.
2012 models will have it where it should be, in the center console.

The controls work from the wheel for my car when I plug in the iPod. Should be the same for you. It also works in Pandora as well, which surprised me.

I like it in the glovebox. There is a nice tray to keep the device on. I keep an iPod Classic in there at all times.

The ipod adapter is what made by buy mt first (and only) Apple product in my life. I keep an Ipod that I upgraded with a 240GB hard drive permanently in the car. I've yet to find a better solution for carrying and accessing ALL my music in the car. The Zune is pretty elegant but for in car use, I'd seriously consider getting an iPod. I know... I know...

WEBSURFR, I couldn't agree more. Apple does not mess with their interface as often as MS Zune, and, don't even get me started on all the different implementations of Android based phones. The Apple solution just works. Period. That is why I got an iPod in the first place. I wanted a solution I could take from car to car to car and know it will work. Who in their right mind is going to design an audio system to cater to the smallest segment of the industry? Well, to me, if feeling good about your Zune purchase is important, Ford has a line of vehicles that work pretty well with the Zune. I recommend the new Focus. It has a really sexy MS/Ford Sync system, get great gas mileage, and will work very nicely with your Zune. Like it or not, the Apple iPod is the MB/Rolls Royce/BMW/Bently of the protable music devices. There is a reason the competition is cheaper. You didn't scrimp on your car, why scrimp on your music?

I have the adapter and hooked up a basic 32GB flash drive (loaded with about 30GB of songs) and everything worked perfectly.

IIRC the data does display on the screen and moving from one song to the other could be done on the radio's "forward/back" button.Haven't tried controlling anything via the steering wheel yet.

i like my iPod in the glovebox, it lives there. If it were in the center console i think i would probably bump it around everytime i go in there.

But, does it have:
  • A hold feature for the brake?
  • MB Tex as an option?
  • Diesel, gas V6 and V8 options?
  • Depreciation and 0-60's as fast as the E's?
  • etc?
In cross shopping the Focus, 5 series and E-class, it was close, but the E won for me!

I had to lean all the way over to the glove box just once to connect my iPod, and haven't touched it since.

I too purchased the USB adapter ($40 at my dealer) and added a thumb drive with my tunes. BUT, I took the leap (up or down as your own opinions dictate ) and brought an iPhone4. Now I go between Pandora off the iPhone or my thumb drive. My satellite radio usage has now plummeted to near zero.
