Don't bump that Garage Door

Small tap o the side of the Garage Door...I now have to replace a $1,900 right side mirror.

Monday...didnt start well for me. Hope you guys had a better one.
I'll post pictures and work order after I calm down.

They want $1072.00, just for the 4x6 inch of glass...this includes none of the
hardware, motors, etc...

I swear to god I just tapped the wood part of the garage door - zero damage there.
I don't mind paying for quality merchandise, but this insane, when this piece of
crap just imploded before my eyes. Best to all.
B.

Oh well...peace to all. Learn your lesson, "don't let your wife park the car at night".

Thanks...It could always have been worst (but that could have been in a REAL nice Telecaster in the studio).

Ouch! Sorry to hear that bud.

WOW though, I know these are expensive, but that was more than the scare that my W211 had, when I got quoted a replacement rearview mirror glass (I think $700 JUST for the glass).

That's the kind of stuff that makes people hesitant to own a Benz. It might be accessible to those who aren't pi$$ing out Benjamins all day, but when the bill comes on a repair, you wonder how it isn't.

Definitely cross shop that bad boy, and definitely get a quote from an Indie.

JB - Thanks, I just found those from your post. Appreciate it. I have an email into the vendor in Germany, I am afraid it's probably too late as I am scheduled for the install tomorrow morning. I got two estimates...both came in around 1,700 - 1,800 for one mirror!!!
Thanks again for the good detective work, hopefully it will help somebody else out in the future.
Best,
B.

That sucks!!! Consider that even a tap with a 4000 lb. car is very substantial, especially on a plastic part. Its all about the conservation of mass and energy.

How did this actually happen? My mirrors fold forward and back so to get mirror damaged this bad the force would need to come from the side so that the mirror does not fold.

Just curious.

Looks like your right hand mirror. What country are you in? Is your car right habd drive.

The passenger side mirror does not have auto dimming and is cheaper. Here in Australia I cracked the right hand mirror (Right hand drive) Cost over AU$1400.00, however left side would have been $350.00 as it is not auto dimming.

That looks like the passenger side to me. So the driver side would be MORE expensive??

It is an absurd price for an item that is not better than a similar one on a domestic or less expensive japanese car. To me the issue is not affordability; I don't like to be ripped off.

Mercedes charges too much because they can get away with it. Too many people are paying because of the name. That will not last in today's market place.

I think this will be my last Mercedes. It is a great car, and I enjoy it. However, I enjoyed the Cadillacs that I have owned just as much.

This is why my wife refuses to drive the Benz. Several years ago, I did the same thng with passenger side mirror on a Ford Taurus. It was powered and heated. Got a used mirror for $50.00 including having it shipped and another $25 to get it repainted by a body shop. Did the install myself.
One problem with some makes is that replacement parts such as this are usually black or primer, so they have to be painted.
This is one of the worries I have about owning an M-B producut, but apparently M-B doesn't care. Their thinking is that the people buying the real expensive cars will pay anything for maintenance and parts, so profits will be high anyway.

Nuts... that's crazy. At least the rest of us will know to be extra careful. For the first week or so I used to fold the side mirrors when backing out of the garage but stopped doing it. I think I'll go back to that!

My insurance had a 500.00 deductable and a discount I get every year would go away...so I just paid for it. My service shop (Cantlin) ended up charging me $1,510.00 (less than what I had been quated at two different dealers). Regardless...it was a huge ripoff system wide. Oh well... Cantlin turned it around in 48 hours and I was back on the road driving...moving on

Arrie - I was backing out slowly and just didnt compensate for where my wife parked the car the night before. Sad thing is...I was looking right AT the mirror as I was backing out. It wasnt a direct hit, just a glancing hit...then BAM $1,510.00.

I'm over spending the money...now I'm just pissed how MB can rationalize gouging people over parts.
