Clirp or No Clirp when Locking and Unlocking

I have to admit, I have not read the manual because it is some what convoluded. Does anyone know if the car is capable of making a sound when you lock or unlock the door from the remote? A chirp, a honk, or some kind of sound as a confirmation. I know that currently, when I lock/unlock the doors with the remote, only the light flashes. Any pointer is appreciated.

If I'm not mistaken, you can change it using Star D. I had my friend at the shop plug the car up to erase some codes and he added it for me.

It's under the "Sett." menu on the multifunction display. It's called "Acoustic Lock Feedback".

Yes,that option exists. My Bluetec came, default, with the chirp enabled...it drove me up a wall so I changed it to light flash only. Can't recall how I did it but it must have been easy because I can only do easy stuff!

Are you guys with late model 2011's getting the "chirp" again, or the putrid akind-to-a-$12K-car "honk"? My 2010 had the chirp, and my 2011 3/11 build date has the hideous honk, so I just have it set to quiet (which I kinda like anyway, I guess).

I turned it off because not only did they change the acoustic feedback to use the horn, they changed Keyless Go to be activated by touch rather than an actual push. Every time I came near the car in the garage, I was locking the car and honking the horn. It's a good thing my neighbors are gone for the summer, they would have thought I was crazy.

The flashing lights provide good enough confirmation without contributing another honking horn in a parking lot.

How a company can call themselves "Luxury Automakers" when having a honk for an alarm notification, is beyond me. The notification is the first initiation to your experience with the car, and having something that is the polar opposite of sophistication and refinement, leaves a lot to be desired in that dept.

My $60K Mercedes honks....my $25K Toyota chirps I find both equally annoying.

I keep it turned off on the Mercedes and I'll use the emergency button if I need noise to find the car and don't see the flashes (I woudn't hear the beeps in a large garage or field where I can't find my car). I dont' have any problem listening to the clicks and watching the lock button going down/up when I open/close the car doors and I prefer that to even the chirps.

Fortunately, the "clicks" from our locks sound pretty solid/substantial, so I just use that as my "welcome" to the Benz. It tells a different story than a "chirp", but it's fitting nonetheless.

I.too, find the honk a bit crude but there are certainly many other areas where they might have "saved a buck" that would have been much more important to me. I'm pleased that they have kept the price where I can afford it.

With all the complaining about this issue, I can't believe someone hasn't taken the car to a reputable alarm/stereo shop and requested them to add an extra horn with a relay to the door lock/unlock to get the oh so desired chirp. Just disarm the audilble sound to defeat the horn and then you will always have the chirp from the aftermarket horn. Am I simplifying this solution too much??

Why should there be a necessity to do that, when a brand that considers themselves to be the utmost of Luxury, and charges a premium to their cars, doesn't do this to begin with? Even the most "bypass negatives to be happy with my purchase" types will have to admit that there is nary a sound more nasty than a honk.

One last reply (by me at least) on this topic. When I had the walk thru on picking up the car, I turned off the audible signal because on my previous Infiniti M37, it was a loud beep of the horn. Today, and because of this thread, I turned the audible signal on, just to see what the mercedes sound is.

Yes, they use the horn, but the unlock sound is a very short (and quiet) beep..not like blowing the horn; the lock sound is three very quiet, quick beeps. It is far far quieter than the infiniti and actually, I might just leave it on. Certainly none of the beeps is loud enough to help me find the car in a parking lot if I'm not within maybe 15 feet of the car. I think it's actually quieter than my toyota's chime sound.

Perhaps other e350's are much louder...I have nothing to compare to other than my previous car.

Wow, am I the only one here who doesn't mind the quiet "honk" sound? Really I have no preference of either "chirp" or "honk" as long there is some kind of acoustic feedback.

It's interesting that K-A's old 2010 ride has "chirp" instead.

I agree 100%, but I was just saying that if someone wants the chirp bad enough and can't stand the horn then there should be a pretty simple and inexpensive option.

haha, have to say.....it made me feel better to hear the horn, and knowing it was locked....BUT, now I really opt for the soundless locking business, like that much better...

My E350 has Oct. '09 build date and Settings do not permit enabling/disabling an audio component to lock/unlock. In fact, no way to change at all.

A chirp or "honk" is to confirm the locking and unlocking of the car and not necessarily for locating the car in a large parking lot. Panic can serve that purpose. Visual is good, but I tend to keep my visual attention to my surroundings in case of troublemakers when approaching or leaving the vehicle.

I am disappointed that there is a "honk" but I guess I an live with it. Sounds cheap like a cheaper Chevy models. I assume the alarm sound is "honk honks" instead of shrilling sound. Cost Cutting for sure.
