Took delivery of 2012 E550 4matic
Our 2011 was deemed a lemon so Mercedes let us order a new 2012 model. Just picked it up tonight so I took some pictures of the new 2012 features - some that you all were not aware of.
Specs:
2012 E550 W4
Paladium Silver
P1
P2
Driver Assistance Package
Rear side-imact air bags
Active multi-contour driver's seat
Split-folding rear seats
Accessory styling package
Airmatic(special order)
The first two things are the brakes and the BlueEfficency badge, which will be removed tomorrow. It looks liker Mercedes listened to complaints about the horrible brakes on the early mdoels, so for 2012, the front brakes ahve been upgraded to Brembo 4-piston calipers and what looks to be about a 355mm rotor. They are MUCH better. They are pretty massive, there is only about 5mm of clearance between the wheel barrel and the caliper
No surprise here, no more hockey sticks
New steering wheel and of course the new color DIS
Airtmatic($1610 special order option)
The chrome door pulls have been replace with satin silver ones to better match the interior and hide fingerprints
And of course, the new 4.6TT. Not sure how I feel about this compared to the 5.5. It is a ton louder at idle and it sounds like a diesel until it's warm. There is not as much low end torque as the 5.5. It only took a little throttle and no more than 1500 rpm to feel the torque of the 5.5 whereas the 4.6 needs to rev. Not sure how to explain this to people who ahve never driven a car with the 5.5, but the 5.5 kind of has a smooth, quiet, tame growl to it inside the cabin. The 4.6 does not. Being that this is an Alusil motor it needs a proper break-in so I have yet to report on how the extra power feels in the top end.
Again, where the hell is the damn dipstick? Seriously Mercedes?

Porsche Macan S SportDesign / Ex M-B's: 11 & 10 & 06 E350's, 02 S500
Wow, thanks for for the in depth post!
I had no idea about the brakes. Anyone know if the E350's get those same brakes?? Or do they get the same brakes as the pre-12's I wonder.
Also, very interesting about the satin door pulls. Not sure how I feel about that, certainly will be more functional, but chrome door pulls are M-B tradition (and I am kinda partial to them). And finally, M-B used to have such clean engine covers! Their new 5.5 and especially 3.5L look really messy/unfinished when you look under hood (obviously because they're showing more of the upper engine wires and less cover).
Anyway, congrats. Odd to hear about the engine being subpar, but hopefully it refines itself as it brakes in, and I'm sure you'll come to hopefully love it.
I got a call from a Dealer and I might go check out the first 2012 E350 they got in later on....

one more: why was your 2011 deemed a lemon?
(and why do lemons themselves get such a bad rep?.....)

Yeah I know, it's not completely latched. On my car I'm used to just gently closing the hood then pressing down to latch it, you have to slam it on this car to catch both latches
No way is the blue one the dip stick. The 5.5 had that blue one too and as with this one, there is no fluid registering on it. Some Audis have a blue dupstick for the transmission, and this one has a picture of a gear on the top of it, so I assume it's for the trans.
The 2011 was deemed a lemon because of an issue with (we think) the keyless go. It had the same symptoms as some other people on here have had. It would turn the radio on and drain the battery, the wipers would go in the up position, and sometimes it would not start for whatever reason. Merecedes had three attempts at fixing the problem and we were without the car for a good month or so. They brought in a special technician who replaced ever single component that has been known to cause this issues that affects E's and S' and it seems to have fixed the issue. It was still having a weird transmission issue where it would hold a gear for too long, so they lemoned it.

looks great! You have good taste in cars. I previously owned a Red on Black '05 B6 Audi S4...loved that car.
How do you like having the E-Class in comparison to the S4?

BTW would like to see how the new brakes affect the stopping distance from 60-0... I was disappointed with the sub 125-feet stopping distance of my 550 when Jaguar and BMW seem to be in the 110-feet range.

New steering wheel is cool, but on a materials level, the "old" Sport wheel is superior, as it has the soft/grained vinyl material extending all over it, while the new one has the more fingerprint-prone, silver hard plastic (faux-aluminum basically), which is obviously what makes it nicer to many of us.

My Bluetec came with those stickers and I removed them.Just pulled them off (gently) and, after a little wax, you'd never know that they were ever there....even on close inspection.
