2011 E350 4MATIC SEDAN Winter Tire
I own a 2011 E350 4MATIC sedan (Toronto, Canada). The local tire dealer has installed Michelin Alpin PA3 winter tires size 225/50/R17 on new 17" rims. The OEM all season tire size is 245/40/R18 which is a Pirelli. Is the installed winter tire correct for this model? Also will the under sized tires void the MB warranty? I cannot find this tire size recommended anywhere on the internet. Any info will be very much appreciated. Thanks.

That's a great size for a winter set-up, having virtually the same rolling diameter as the 18s. Cheaper than 18s and narrower for better contact. It will not void your warranty.

Correct. A narrower tire will give better winter performance and as long as you keep the same outside diameter you'll be fine and have no warranty woes.

2011 E350 4Matic Estate in Mystic Red
I have the same tire but on 18 inch - personal preference. I researched the matter and 17 and 18 tires are fine with this vehicle. MB published a document (in German) with all engine/versions of this car with acceptable tire and wheel combinations, and 17 and 18 inch are fine. 16 inch was not listed for our NA version though.

The document in question can be downloaded from the MB Ch (Swiss) website at http://tinyurl.com/79y8m7q
under Typ212
VA = Vorderachse (front axle), HA= Hinterachse
We are "Variante 3" - "Hinweis" (Footnote) 1 states that no modification or change in documentation is needed, and footnote 6 states not possible with the E500 4Matic.
----
actually, when reading your post, the 17 inch tire combination is slightly different (225/50/R17 vs. 245/45/17 in that document), so I take everything back - I don't know.

The tire diameter is less than 1% different from OEM. He will be fine.

Yep Im a big proponent of Tire Rack,,Im going to replace the Conti's that came with the car and go with the Conti DWS all season Ultra Hi Performance.
Highly rated on their surveys,,and winter in NY can be a trip.
Price is very reasonable as well.

16's aren't listed for this car because a 16" wheel won't clear the front brakes.
I prefer to stick to the exact stock sizes, even in winter, just so the car doesn't look funny with skinny tires. Your 225/50/17 will probably work great for you...and i'm sure they are half the price of a 245/40/18 set-up.

2012 E350 18x 8.5" and 18x9" wheels, ET48 and 52mm
I bought a set of these for a 2011 E350 4Matic before accepting delivery of the car. I was planning on using these with winter tires.
OEM Tires are 245/40/18 Continentals. I had seen posts describing the use of a staggered set up of 245/40 and 265/35/18s but I now have reason to believe that this set up is for non 4Matics. I just want to confirm this. I can appreciate that a half-inch difference makes a big difference...
I do not want to damage the car in anyway. I accept responsibility for the purchase. If I need to I can sell the 18x9" wheels locally and recoup my investment.
Feedback is welcome. Thanks.
