Excessive cranking when starting.

I just got my 2012 E350 4matic sedan on 12/12. I've noticed overtime that the car does not start smoothly. There is excessive cranking before it eventually turns over. It is much more prominent when the car is cold or has been sitting for a while. I just got it to the dealer today and first was told they confirmed the problem and they need to keep the car a day or two to test it. I was than told this is the norm on blue efficiency vehicles. The excessive cranking and whining sound before the car starts is designed to keep emissions low on the new engine. Wanted to know if anyone else's 2012 experiences this excessive cranking and wining before their car turns over and starts. Before i go and pick up the car. Thanks

What is "excessive?"

I think you mean your cranking time is a tad longer than normal

I wouldn't say a tad. It's a good 3 - 5 seconds. Compared to instant as it should be...

I have a 2011 and my engine cranks for approx. 3-4 seconds, especially if its cold or I've let the car sit longer than 8 hours. I don't consider this excessive, but just sharing that its not only you.

3-4 seconds of cranking is a long time. Mine is pretty instant, maybe 1 second, if that, though, I just pinpointed a "chirp" sound at idle when I started the car up (cold), which brings me back to my '06 E350 days (had to replace a pulley belt, if I remember correctly).

3-5 seconds is way too long. BMW has those issues that point to a failing high pressure fuel pump. Let's hope that MB isn't having the same issues.

Mine is so fast cranking that sometimes I get the prior 3 seconds back, 3 seconds back, 3 seconds back, 3 seconds back.

Sorry....time loop from starting my car.

K-A, not to revive an old thread, but I'm also getting a chirping from the engine when the engine is cold (ie. overnight or after sitting all day at work) that goes away after the engine is warm. Do you have any other characteristics? I'm also getting a whine (more like a dull whirring/roaring noise) that's rpm dependent at low (< 2100) rpm that also seems to go away when the engine is warm. Sound similar to either of your situations?

To address this thread, my '10 E350 with 55k miles MIGHT take 2 seconds to turn over but that's only after sitting all weekend...otherwise it's pretty fast.

Crap, you reminded me of this issue. I haven't payed attention since I posted that.

I'll try and listen for it again, hopefully it "went away". I had it on my W211 and it was a pulley belt or something like that.

I just bought an 08 s550 with 58k miles and I am having the same issue with the push button start. Mine will crank a good 2-3 seconds before it starts. This isnt always the case but it does it warm and cold. It does it every other time on average. This car was just inspected by the dealer thoroughly and battery is fine. Any resolution to the issue with yours? Curious to know what it might be.

Hi,
I had a 05 ML 500 that began to crank too long before starting, when it previously started instantly. This was at 40K miles.Glyn from this board suggested it was fuel filter/ gas pressure regulator which are in same part. He was correct as it solved the problem.
Don't know if your car has same combo part. Do you know when fuel filter
was changed/ if it has been changed?
