Let's talk radar detectors.

Recently made the move to the Los Angeles area and find myself driving ~100 miles per day with a ton of CHP's. Anyone running a radar detector / laser system on there W212? Looking for ideas on custom install vs a window mount. I hate dangling wires!

I have the 9500 ix, it was in my 4runner hardwired to the mirror and attached with a blendmount. They don't carry Mbz mounts. For now its attached to the lower middle of windshield, just above the dash so it has a line of sight to rear. This detector saved me once going to vegas, I slowed down and the person passing me got nailed. This detector is good for straightaways but is lacking on curves.

I have Escort 9500 ix mounted on the lower left corner of my windshield. I ordered the long cable for it and run it from the glove box in the space between windshield and dashboard. You only see about 6" of the wire running to the detector.

Arrie - sounds like a pretty straight forward install. Any issues with sensitivity mounted that low in the window?

I have a V-1 in all four of my vehicles. When I got the "E," I took it to the dealership and had it hard wired. It took him about three hours primarily researching to ensure he got it on a hot wire with ignition on, only, and without interferring with any of the computers on board. They never charged me a penny for the install. I have it located on the windshield at the top next to driver's side of rear view mirror. It is pretty well concealed except for the driver. Considering it is on the windshield, it looks pretty good. I have a dark tinted strip across to top of my windshield, so from the outside, it is absolutely undetectable. The one on my Vette is mounted to the bottom of the rear view mirror with a special designed bracket that makes it look like it came from the factory installed. The other two vehicles (Escalade and Silverado) are both mounted at the top of the windshield. All four are hard wired. I agree with you, I would do without a detector before I had a wire hanging down in front of the dash. I guess it the ole proverb, "If there's a will, there's a way."

I have an Escort 8500 x50 detector and love it. Had it for about 5 years and the thing payed for itself many times over. I don't have it hard wired just the old fashioned suction cup mount on the windshield. Sees forwards and back and very few false positives. I recommend this detector from first hand experience.
If you want something professionally installed take a look at Mid City Engineering. They do some amazing after market modifications and professional radar detector installation is one of the things they excel at -- http://midcityengineering.com/radar-interfaces Also do a few searches on You Tube for "Mid City Engineering Radar Detector" and you will see some amazing examples of the work they can do.

It works really well at least looking forward but it also pics signals from behind.

And very easy installation.

This installation can also be done in the middle higher up if you want it to look back too but then it is very visible to everyone.

I have an 8500x50 in the garage but figured is was so old that the hardware / software wouldn't be current with today's guns. May just do a quick install for a few weeks to see how it does.

You Rock...I had the BlueRay collection on my xmas list but the boys didn't pick that one. What is your favorite Bond film? Mine is probably The Man with the Golden Gun. The scenery for Scaramonga's island hideout was incredible.

In our neck of the woods, Radar detectors are pretty much useless. I use laser jammers now and chucked the V1. I think the V1's directional arrows were very useful. This point is moot because Laser jammers are illegal in CA.

But parking aides are perfectly fine.... I was headed towards the STiR+ but the V1 is starting to look better and better. The strong customer loyalty is almost overwhelming and I can really see the value in the arrows.

If you are interested in Laser Jamming and already have the Escort 8500 X50 you should take the Escort ZR4 Laser Shifter (https://www.escortradar.com/store/la...ifter-zr4.html) for a test. You can actually link the Laser Shifter up with the Radar Detector to get both Radar and Laser feedback on one device. I haven't tried this product but heard good things about it. Also Escort is running a program where if you turn in your old radar detector they will discount the price of the new one.

haha!! love TMGG! ditto on location: Easter Islands I think....(?)
great movie! and Goodnight was a button too....
picking a fav is tough: I like 'em all very much.........have studied them many, many years.....
I'd probably say I have a fav in each catergory of Bonds.....
but an overall pick is tough!
and I'll add some of my collection is still VHS LOL
I don't even have a blue ray or a big flat screen telly for that matterhaha

I am planning on ordering up a couple of the V1's and having them hardwired in.......
I have read lots of good things about them too, and about jammers, I think they are illegal in NC too, but I'm not certain.
I do enjoy 'interviewing' state troopers when ever I see them out eating somewhere, they're always friendly and like to talk
about driving.......
questions about WOT on entrance ramps, who is more likely to get caught in a speeding convoy of cars, tailgating, not moving over....etc......
they'll answer just about anything I've found.....

How were the water conditions - clean & clear or murky? Would love to hang on that beach for a while.

"You only live Twice" is my favorite.
"Man with the Golden Gun" is probably my least

...but I actually liked both MoonRaker and View to a Kill, so what do I know

I also have the 9500ix and it is mounted right below the headliner, to the right of the rear view mirror. I used the long cord available on ebay and tucked it in the trim work all the way down to the glove box where it is plugged in. You can not see anything, no cord, no plug. You can not see the detector from outside the car and it is high enough you can't see it from behind the car at night either.

Only down side is that I can not fully extend the passenger visor past about 75% full swing.

I also have a 9500ix in my Corvette. I dont usually speed, but these detectors have more than paid for themselves just in speed traps and limit-change zones.
