99.9 MPG!
To get back home, you travel 16 mi steeply down from the mountains to the desert floor. The altitude changes more than 4,000ft in that 16 mile span. As you can imagine, you never have to touch the gas.
For fun, I observed the computer mileage calc. Just before we got all the way down, the display got all the way to 99.9. It wouldn't go any higher so it is apparent that the display has only 3 digits.
BTW, that stretch helped the overall mileage for the trip (mostly interstate) come out to 34+mpg.

One thing I noticed in Tennessee was that once the transmission was in 7th Gear it never budged even at 70mph.That's one of the things that 400 ft lbs of torque will do for you!

I grew up in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, between the Blue Ridge and Applacian Mountains. I know mountains. Cloudcroft was different. One thing I remember very distinctively, were the numerous deer grazing in people's yards along the highway. It was a true Kodak Moment!
I'm sorry Don, as I told my son, NM was a nice place to visit, but I personally would not want to live there. Too isolated for me. As a matter of fact, I had to leave my cell phone in my suitcase the entire time we were there...it was useless in NM. I have Sprint service. I guess if you don't have Verizon, you are SOL in NM.
Anyway, when you mentioned, Cloudcroft, I said , OMG, I have been there. I'm living in Montgomery, Alabama, so that was worth posting to me!
You're analogy of slopes and head/tail winds is right on. Those mountain roads are sure fun, though, going up or down.

Glad you enjoyed Cloudcroft. I assume when you went to Holloman AFB that you went to White Sands National Monument also. Truely one of the most unique sites in the world.

Also noticed that when I reset trip MPG, it always starts with about 22.5 MPG even if I reset while going downhill and foot off accelerator.
