99.9 MPG!

Beautiful day today so the wife and I took a 120mi drive to Cloudcroft, NM for lunch. Cloudcroft is in the Sacremento mtn range at an altitude of 8,600ft.

To get back home, you travel 16 mi steeply down from the mountains to the desert floor. The altitude changes more than 4,000ft in that 16 mile span. As you can imagine, you never have to touch the gas.

For fun, I observed the computer mileage calc. Just before we got all the way down, the display got all the way to 99.9. It wouldn't go any higher so it is apparent that the display has only 3 digits.

BTW, that stretch helped the overall mileage for the trip (mostly interstate) come out to 34+mpg.

Regards,
Don

Nice, is that a Benzine or Diesel model you are driving? I'm pretty sure that slopes are to cars, as winds are to aircraft. A tailwind never helps you as much as a headwind hurts you. A downslope never helps you as much as an upslope hurts you!

While driving through the hills of East Tennessee recently (I-75) I wondered what effect traveling up and down fairly steep hills/mountains had on mileage.I didn't do a specific mileage test for that stretch but someday I'm gonna do I-70 out to Denver and beyond. That should be fun.

One thing I noticed in Tennessee was that once the transmission was in 7th Gear it never budged even at 70mph.That's one of the things that 400 ft lbs of torque will do for you!

Don, I think I mentioned on a post a few months ago that my son is a Federal Air Marshall and is currently assigned to the (FLETC) Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Artesia, NM. He is a small arms consultant to the training staff there. We went out to visit them in November, 2009. During our visit we went up to Cloudcroft and hung out a little while, then went on down to Alamagordo(SP?), to visit Holloman AFB. I am retired AF. That is one impressive mountain range.

I grew up in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, between the Blue Ridge and Applacian Mountains. I know mountains. Cloudcroft was different. One thing I remember very distinctively, were the numerous deer grazing in people's yards along the highway. It was a true Kodak Moment!

I'm sorry Don, as I told my son, NM was a nice place to visit, but I personally would not want to live there. Too isolated for me. As a matter of fact, I had to leave my cell phone in my suitcase the entire time we were there...it was useless in NM. I have Sprint service. I guess if you don't have Verizon, you are SOL in NM.

Anyway, when you mentioned, Cloudcroft, I said , OMG, I have been there. I'm living in Montgomery, Alabama, so that was worth posting to me!

It's a gasser.

You're analogy of slopes and head/tail winds is right on. Those mountain roads are sure fun, though, going up or down.

Don

You're righ, OJ. Most of NM is beyond isolated. I live all the way down south right on the border with El Paso which, in this part of the country, is a major metropolitan area.

Glad you enjoyed Cloudcroft. I assume when you went to Holloman AFB that you went to White Sands National Monument also. Truely one of the most unique sites in the world.

Don

Gotta agree with that.Having seen parts of southern Nevada,Arizona and the desert of Southern California I must say that I find deserts to be very depressing.Impressive in small doses but..live there? No thanks.

Interesting. The "current" MPG gauge for my car maxes out at 40 MPG, which I consider wierd. My previous Toyotas and Hyundais would show 99 if I was going down hill and foot off the accelerator.
Also noticed that when I reset trip MPG, it always starts with about 22.5 MPG even if I reset while going downhill and foot off accelerator.

Yes Sir, we did go to White Sands, spent a lot of time there and took lots of pictures. You are right, I spent a total of 14 years in Germany and one year in Korea in the USAF and I never seen anything to compare with the uniqueness of White Sands. When people see the pics, they swear it is snow!

I've noticed that. I assume the software integrates the reading, so having a starting point close to the combined expected mpg probably smooths out the initial readings.
