2012 E550 vs 2011 X5M (Kill story)
One of my customers has an X5M and pulled up beside me last night, wanting to see what my 4.6TT could do (since i keep telling him it's surprisingly quick). We were rolling at 30km/hr (19mph) and i let him do the countdown. We were both in low gear & ready to go.
By 100km/hr (60mph) i was a full car ahead and kept pulling.
I think we were both surprised at the outcome.

Mercedes has the best traction control and does not affect acceleration whereas most cars need to have it turned off for best acceleration times. 550HP vs 400HP and still the Merc wins. Mercedes makes the best engines in the world!

Really? Because when I turn traction control off I notice a significant increase in acceleration. How could traction control work if it did NOT reduce acceleration? That is what it does, it reduces acceleration.

Does your 550 have 4matic? I get same acceleration times with traction turned on and off on my E550 4matic. My car runs 0-60 in 4.6s when i floor it. Your car might be even faster with the new engine, but I still prefer naturally aspirated over turbos.

Good traction control, stability control, and anti-lock brakes (like MB's) allow some slippage, perhaps close to the optimum. Slam on your brakes or floor your car - you'll hear tire squeal. Traction control does not work by reducing acceleration - it works by reducing excess slippage (but not all slippage). So acceleration CAN be better with TC unless you have a right foot that can keep wheelspin in the optimal range.

Yes, it's 4Matic. The 2012 is quite a bit quicker than the 2011...i own both. The 4.6TT is closer in power to what my E55AMG was...like, really close! The 4Matic was the clincher for me swapping from my AMG. We deal with 5 months of ice & snow every year.

That's easy: Optimal traction (thus acceleration) is obtained with certain amount of tire slippage. Too little or too much slippage reduces traction.

The 2013 E550 will even be faster with the 30HP boost, making it the fastest AWD vehicle you can buy in that price range. BMW will have a hard time selling their 550xi and those X5Ms or X6Ms...

how are you gauging your 0-60?
