This appears to be a combination of condensation + dust (clouding) on the inside of the unit. I assume that you have P2 on your E550. My 2011 (which I just turned in) did not exhibit this after 35,000+ miles so I would suspect a material defect either in the seals or the shield itself.

It looks like in the pics, that it is the same outline on both headlights?? Is that true? If so, that rules out condensation/dust on the inside. And for it being due to age, I hope not, its a 2011 car. Thats crazy Yosheego.. I'm definitely going to check mine, I would have never noticed this either. Its almost like the heat of the hid beam making its mark on the plastic.

My '10 E63 is doing the same. Had my service rep take a look at it and they're supposedly ordering 2 new entire headlamp assemblies for replacement. We'll see if the new ones will do the same thing in a year or two.

Really? Lucky you, cuz my dealer told me nothing they can do! So I'm SOL. Not to happy about it.

As long as there is no external damage, factory warranty covers replacement. To date MBUSA has not released any bulletins specific to this but common sense should prevail in a situation such as yours.

I guess I will have to ask for a MB representative for that dealer to look at it. I don't understand why they would not replace the headlights for me. Do they have to put money out of their pocket for this warranty work?

Dealer rep told me there is nothing they can do about it.
This makes sense to anyone? What's funny is my wife pointed out.
Anyone else having this?

Agreed. My dealer replaced both my headlights and said it was covered. The only caveat is I noticed it pre-purchase but they replaced them but I don't think they would have had they not been covered. I believe the whole unit needs to be replaced and they cost over $700 each.

I forgot about this thread. So here's an update to my predicament. Not different from many of you. Two MB dealers I visited said they will not replace the headlights. It is covered under warranty but they both mentioned the problem will reoccur so what's the point of changing the headlamps.
Anyone else learn more about this problem?

My service rep followed up with me. He stated MB is not covering the lights under the warranty. MB now states this is not a manufacturer's defect.
The service rep popped open one of the returned lights with the imprint. He stated it's merely dust trapped on the inside. Pop one of the bulbs out, and wipe down the area with a cotton ball. Do not use alcohol. He claims it does the trick.
Anyone gonna give it a whirl?

I have the same thing on my 2011 E350 with P1. It was there before I did the HID upgrade.
It was an incredible pain to access that area by the wheel so cleaning it will be the same.
