keys not tied to memory seats?!

have a 2013 e350 - 1st mb after years of BMWs. In the BMWs the seat/wheels/mirror memory is tied to the key that is opening the door. So my wife and I have totally different setting... in the MB the memory seems to be the same regardless of key.

Am I not setting something correctly or has MB not heard of this simple feature?

wifey is 5'4" I amd 6'3" so I need to unlock, hit mem x, wait (in the rain, etc) for the seat to move far enough for me to fit - annoying.

MB had a feature similar to BMW when a key defines not only memory seats but also radio stations preset, climate control temperature, mirrors and other stuff. Actually I am under impression that MB still has it on some models, but I can't confirm for W212. BTW why you decide to drop BMW?

It may be tied to MB's decision not to let the seats adjust without a concerted effort by the driver/passenger.

Notice how you have to hold the memory button down while to seat is adjusting. It would be no more technologically difficult, or expensive, to have the seat adjust fully with just the press and release of the button. Many cars do this.

I don't know why MB made this decision but I suspect it's a safety or legal thing. Someone probably sued MB after getting their fat gut squeezed by the steering wheel. Or maybe someone your wife's size inadvertently hit a memory button for someone your size while driving and couldn't reach the pedals.

Regards,
Don

switched to MB due to loosing 2 cars to Sandy and MB was avail in immediate stock. vs BMW that needed to be waited for... its also way cheaper due to a special program this month(we are leasing). My payment is 40% (!!!) less on a 65k msrp vehicle than it was on a 7ok x5

Think this:

A child is playing in the car on the front seat and you come with the key and initiate the car lock opening. The seat and steering wheel move injuring the child. Geuss what, a law suit against MB.

Driving the car on highway and accidentally push the wrong memory button and the seat and wheel move putting you off the road. Guess what, a law suit against MB.

If I was MB I would disable these nice features too. And what the big deal is is anyway to hold that memory button for a few seconds to get your seat settings in? How fu....g lazy have we become?

The seats in my lexus won't adjust unless in park. Try adjusting them everyday by holding when your other car has the better feature. Lame.

While on park someone can still be sitting/playing on the seat when the seat movement is started.

I know it was a very nice feature in my Tahoe when it set the seat based on which key FOB was used to unlock the car. It also moved the seat to position by just touching the memory button. It just was that the seat moved all the way from the touch. If someone plays a practical joke on you they can set the seat to the lowest and furthest back position and if you are a short person you could loose control of the car while driving.

I think is is good to disable this especially while the car is moving but again, someone could get hurt even when it is parked.

And what the .... Is your problem?

My post is not just for you.

I like my seat moving when I'm driving. I drive hours at times only stopping for gas. Yes, really a tankful in straight driving, like 450 miles. It is nice to be able to change my driving position on such a long drives without having to stop for it.

Ecactly idiot!

In my car I can hold the pre-set seat position to change my seat as I drive. Yes, I have to hold it for a few seconds for the seat to reach the new position. Not a problem for me.

You obviously like your "rice burner" feature better so enjoy it.

And I thought even you understood why the seat memory button must be held down for the seat to move...

I have three different driving positions programmed in my seat. When I drive these long drips I often change the seat position especially if I had a long day and feel little tired.

I do it while driving just holding the button I want to use. If I don't hold the button all the seat movements stop until I press and hold it again.

My 2011 E350 worked the same way. Don't know of the later models.

My previous mover, the Tahoe, had this function so that if you just press it the seat goes all the way to the setting that is programmed to it. This could be very dangerous if someone changed the setting or if it somehow just reset to some odd position. In that car if the seat went all the way back I would not reach the pedals.

So, I think it is an excellent safety feature to have to press and hold the memory button to make the seat position changes while driving.

I must admit , I first found this very annoying that you have to press and hold the button but now I am too convinced that this way is a better and neat feature

I have to agree. I work in the medical field and sometimes scratch my head as to why we do some of the things we do, but somehow somewhere somone was killed because of it. I remember many years ago we had to put "no blood products" on every microwave. Someone thought is would be nice to warm the blood for a transfusion after it being in the fridge as to provide comfort to the patient. Well it killed them!!!

Hmm... haven't tried this on the W212, but there was an option on my W211 to make some settings key-specific. The menus for the W212 have far fewer options than the W211 so this capability may not exist when using the normal user mode menus.

Like OP I am surprised the W212 doesn't seem to have this feature. My 2009 BMW has it. Hell, my 2004 VW Passat had memory seats tied to key fob....

Lawsuit probably doesn't explain it; more likely, too many glitches.

But it is a failing by MB

It is very nice in the BMW to know when i get in the radio, heat and seat will be in my position and the car won't be blasting hot air, hair metal and have the seat up close to steering wheel....
