W212 E550 Exhaust Recommendations

Hey everyone,

Over the past little while, I've been wanting to make my E550 Sedan louder than its factory sound level. I love the car, but its way to docile for my liking. After reading a many threads and listening to a couple of videos, I'm still at a loss on what to do...

Long story short, has anyone modified their exhaust in a cost efficient manner that results in a louder sound, but not to the point where drone in the cabin is too much. Let me know!

If you can find a picture of the entire exhaust system please post it here. In my Rover Sport I removed one of the resonators with straight pipe. It comes with 2 of them.
The sound was awesome and not too loud at all. ( unless you stepped on the gas hard ).

I bet this will be the sound you are looking for.

I also didn't have an y emission problems or warning lights since the resonator removed was just to reduce the sound.

Thanks for the resonator idea. It has been my only complaint as I have driven the E550 - too quiet. The E63 is amazing hat way.
The sound is part of the driving experience. Audi is one of the experts in this area. I think they stole it from Lamborghini (whom they own)

In 2011, the E63 was not available in 4Matic. Crucial for us northerners.

I just finished my mods and will post a video clip here when I figure it out...

I left in the hands of someone who claimed they knew exactly what to do - but they did not.

Step 1:
X-Pipe Added, Resonator Delete, Muffler Delete, J-Pipe added.
Ridiculous sound. Incredible, but sounded like a Nascar - waaaayyy too loud.

Step 2:
Added the resonator back in.
I think I am happy. I may get the J-Pipes adjusted, as there is ZERO drone above 1500 RPM, but the low revs under load can be loud.

I took a video before, after step 1, and after step 2 - but don't know how to post them here...

Is the J-pipe a replacement of the the cat? By doing any of the above, would it effect warranty?

Yes would love to see and hear a clip

Of course exhaust warranty is done - not that there really is much anyway. The rest is fine according to the dealer - because all the sensors are after the cats.

This is a short clip of the final result. Need to get a longer video done.

Still - you get the idea....

That sounds pretty mean. Can you post a longer vid and one driving?

I actually have a little video i was messing around with. I had my iphone 5 in the back seat recording the drive. Have had my resonator removed and replaced with an x-pipe. I don't have the before videos, just the after. But if you have a iphone 5 and e550, i guess u can record it in the same manner and maybe hear the difference from you stock? I'll post it later tonight. But if you want total e63 sound experience, IMO, just get an aftermarket exhaust ie. meisterschaft/eisenmann/or any other reputable brand.

Does it growl? I love the V8 growl

Thanks for the video , I liked it
I might be wrong but in some cases , the W212 sounded like 6.75 liter V8 Rolls Royce this is what I like deep and growling throaty sound .

I would be interested in opinions on this sound right now. The j-Pipe gives an odd wind sound as the revs drop. Not sure I like it. I do LOVE the growl.

That sounds pretty good. Is that just a removal of the mid muffler and replacing it with a straight pipe?

No,
Both mufflers deleted, with j-pipes in their place.
X-Pipe added

FYI - There is no mid muffler on the E550.

Thanks for posting the vids. It really helps and now you can hear the V8 exhaust notes I think this is one affordable mod to do. By the way, is it loud in the cabin?

I think it sounds good, but my wife isn't as sure . Full trhottle is great actually.

When it is warming up the idle is a bit loud, but once it has warmed up it sounds great at idle and revving.

I am still not 100% sure, because at low rev under load, it is loud / unpleasant. I may yet experiment with low resistance mufflers in place of the j-pipes. It is hard to experiment because the exhaust pipes are so darn large - parts are not easily available to do a mock-up.

How much did it cost to do this mod if you don't mind me asking?

I don't know. My 2011 550 is a 5.5L V8. I believe the 350 is a 3.5L V6 (it might vary in some years?), so the sound won't be the same.

FastE, did you do the exhaust work yourself? Where did you get the X-Pipe and j-pipes?
