2014 E350 DIY 4. Micro-Mod - Tree Nail

Here is today's installment of micro-mod #4, the Tree Nail.

Now before you all go guessing what a Tree Nail is ... I don't know why MB calls it a Tree Nail, I just call it a Trunk Hook.

I was surprised to NOT find on my new 2014 E350, that the trunk now lacks a very helpful accessory, the self-retracting Trunk Hook. It comes down from the rear deck frame to hold the handles of your smaller grocery, camera or gear bags to keep them both upright and reduce the spilling of contents. When not in use, is spring-loaded to remain up and out of the way.

Installation takes less than the time needed to read this post, but here goes:
1. Order part number A 212 810 00 40 9B27. I believe they all come in black only. See picture #1
2. The bottom of the hook (picture #2) shows the two T-20 Torx screws included for installation
3. The top of the hook shows the two square parts that fit into the two holes in the trunk. Note by default the hook stays closed. This is spring-loaded (picture #3)
4. Open the trunk and locate the two holes as shown in picture #4
5. Picture #5 shows the trunk hook half plugged into the underside of the trunk
6. This shows the hook completely finished, being held open by my trusty golf umbrella (picture #6)

Any questions? PM me.

Wow, unfortunate that got cost-cut out of the facelift. Was one of my favorite little useful features on my E's that's missing on my 5.

Buy one from your local Audi store for about $10. You'll find one hole that fits and you can drill another.

BMW has an accessory that does the same thig but isn't as elegant. It is a fixedplastic it with 4 or five "fingers coming from it to hang bags. Your BMW parts store should have that. I think it is $20 or so but the holes to fit it should already be there.

Acura has a similar piece to the Audi part as well.

Talking about trunk accessories, I wonder if anyone has installed an umbrella holder like we see here, I like the concept but don't like to have to do any drilling:

So,

they left one of the most practical trunk features out from the latest models...

This hook is one of the best ideas they ever had with this car (and perhaps wit some other models). I use it absolutely every time I go to buy anything in bags that can be hung on it. Keeps the stuff in place during drive.

Why in the hell would they leave it out from a new car model???

Doesn't it interfere with the cargo box they are pushing? I'd also opine that a majority of owners have no clue that it is (was) there.

If you have the comfort box, the hook will be kind of in the way of it, but you can still use it with the hook hitting the box.

Interfere or not with the cargo box the car should have the hook as it used to. If you buy the option of the cargo box then the hook may not be needed.

I can just say that the amount of bags I can hang on the double hook would never fit in that "rollup" cargo box.
