Why didn't you consider or buy the 5 series equivalent of your E-class?

Why didn't you consider or buy the 5 series equivalent of your E-class?
I'm always curious -- the BMW has amazing features, apparently drives incredibly well (never drove a 5 series), a bit more money, but now has 445/480 hp/tq ttv8 -- very impressive for a non-M car.
Why did you go with the E-class if you were also considering the 5-series -- not looking for a war here, I respect both brands, and think they're both great cars. For me, i was not particularly sold on the looks of the new 5-series, and I've always wants to be in the Benz marque, and the 2k14 E classes "spoke" to me, particularly with the TTV8 underrated power plant...

Downright ugly and not reliable enough. Free maintenance is nice but I don't like going to the dealer more often than needed. After that, as you said the features and handling capability are superior to the Benz but then again I'm not Mario Andretti.

2014 E350 4Matic, 2012 Kia Soul+
My history: 98 E320, 06 E350 E, 08 528i, 11 535i. My next will be a 2014 E350. For me it about what toys the car has and how it rides. Around 2006 Mercedes started making the E sportier while BMW started making it them softer. I switched to BMW. I'm back to Mercedes now because of the luxury suspension. When I test drove it, it felt like the 2006 E that I always loved. Like a smooth tank. Their active lane assist and other safety features seem to have a leg up on BMW. But I will miss the big Nav screen and soft close doors of BMW.

When I got mine, there was no 5er diesel in NA yet.
I do like HUD, soft close doors, and the BMW "chime" sound.

I'm an old die in the wool BMW guy, but I could not stand the steering responce on the 5 so loose and twichy. Reguardless of what K-A states BMW has NOT fixed the Electric Steering problem.
Also I have a 2012 5 series in my garage, my wifes car, and like the OP I saw the new E and dug the look. Love the presence on road with the benz, and it's solid feel.
I felt it was time to try a Benz and I'm very happy so far that I did.
I get a chance to drive both and I pull the E out every time , except when the 5 needs gas.

I don't like the look, a white Benz just looks very clean. Way too many 5ers on the road and the luxury of a benz can't be beat.
BMWs are great drivers, but I just can't see myself in one again unless its a 6 or an M.

Only 2 reasons why I can't allow myself to buy a 5 series.
1. The car is just plain and BORING. There is absolutely nothing you can do to it to make it look attractive... NOTHING!!!
I have to enjoy looking at my car as much as I enjoy driving it.
2. After having a Pano roof in my W211, it's hard to buy a car without one. It's not a show stopper but it makes it very hard to consider a car without one. That's also one reason why I couldn't buy a CLS.

I like the w212 looks much sophisticated than the F10. Also reliability issues. Mercedes produces a much reliable engine. And someone mentioned it looks like a beefed up 3 series.

Free maintenance isn't free - you can buy 50k worth of maintenance with an MB too - add that the price to compare pricing.
BMW is a great car pulled down by a miserable dealer network and a bunch of executives who don't care.

If I could have found the same year 535 Msport I probably would have gotten it. Between a non M sport 535 or 528 and my E I was going with the E. I was also looking hard at a newer XF but just couldn't trust Jag on reliability.

Simple, I drove both, several times and back-to-back over the same roads at the same time of day. ![drive](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/driving.gif)
Price took 2nd place to what I felt when I drove them. And what my future passengers would feel...

I already have a friend who has a 5 series. I love to tease him and tell him it's a 3 series. He dislikes it but doesn't complain so he kind of accepts it
Both are great cars and as someone mentioned I would love to have soft doors and HUD, but I just found the new 2014s to be MUCH more attractive.

Because BMW is not a Mercedes Benz.
MB reputation as a reliable well made car is just so far ahead of BMW (and Audi) in the world.
I also respect all the research MB has done for cars and safety with them before there really was no BMW (or Audi) as a car.
Would be nice if all luxury car buyers would visit the MB museum in Stutgart at the MB main office and plant and read-and-learn how it all started and developed. It would change lots of minds as what car to buy.

I think the other reason, more of a subconscious decision, was that a 2009 E550 saved my best friend's life and his g/f's life in a major car accident. I saw the pictures of the carnage afterwards, and the car stood up like the tank that it is.
I wanted the safest car for myself and my family, I think I have it.

I dunno, to me OP question sounds like it should begins with "Mirror, mirror on the wall ..."

Probably will get flamed but:
I did considered AND I did bought one![thumbs](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif)
After being in two E350 ( 2008 and 2010 , loved both BTW) I just did not really liked 2014 that much.
I test drove it tree times, but it did not felt like a big improvement over my 2010.
Things that I did not liked most - brakes seemed to me got weaker , steering almost like Lexus, throttle delay is still there.
For $78 more per month in payments I did got "445/480 hp/tq ttv8 beast".
There is no such thing as perfect car. Each has it's own weaknesses, but I have no regrets so far.

My wife (5'0") can't adjust the seat on the BMW so she can see over the raised top of the dashboard instruments. She is also very uncomfortable with the fixed seat belt height on the B Pillar. No problems with the 350 though.
