Why didn't you consider or buy the 5 series equivalent of your E-class?
Why did you go with the E-class if you were also considering the 5-series -- not looking for a war here, I respect both brands, and think they're both great cars. For me, i was not particularly sold on the looks of the new 5-series, and I've always wants to be in the Benz marque, and the 2k14 E classes "spoke" to me, particularly with the TTV8 underrated power plant...

Also I have a 2012 5 series in my garage, my wifes car, and like the OP I saw the new E and dug the look. Love the presence on road with the benz, and it's solid feel.
I felt it was time to try a Benz and I'm very happy so far that I did.
I get a chance to drive both and I pull the E out every time , except when the 5 needs gas.

BMWs are great drivers, but I just can't see myself in one again unless its a 6 or an M.
1. The car is just plain and BORING. There is absolutely nothing you can do to it to make it look attractive... NOTHING!!!
I have to enjoy looking at my car as much as I enjoy driving it.
2. After having a Pano roof in my W211, it's hard to buy a car without one. It's not a show stopper but it makes it very hard to consider a car without one. That's also one reason why I couldn't buy a CLS.

Free maintenance isn't free - you can buy 50k worth of maintenance with an MB too - add that the price to compare pricing.
BMW is a great car pulled down by a miserable dealer network and a bunch of executives who don't care.

Price took 2nd place to what I felt when I drove them. And what my future passengers would feel...
Both are great cars and as someone mentioned I would love to have soft doors and HUD, but I just found the new 2014s to be MUCH more attractive.

MB reputation as a reliable well made car is just so far ahead of BMW (and Audi) in the world.
I also respect all the research MB has done for cars and safety with them before there really was no BMW (or Audi) as a car.
Would be nice if all luxury car buyers would visit the MB museum in Stutgart at the MB main office and plant and read-and-learn how it all started and developed. It would change lots of minds as what car to buy.
I wanted the safest car for myself and my family, I think I have it.

Probably will get flamed but:
I did considered AND I did bought one
After being in two E350 ( 2008 and 2010 , loved both BTW) I just did not really liked 2014 that much.
I test drove it tree times, but it did not felt like a big improvement over my 2010.
Things that I did not liked most - brakes seemed to me got weaker , steering almost like Lexus, throttle delay is still there.
For $78 more per month in payments I did got "445/480 hp/tq ttv8 beast".
There is no such thing as perfect car. Each has it's own weaknesses, but I have no regrets so far.

, and the other is a Mercedes Benz
