My 2008 C220 CDi was at the dealer yesterday for a (free) repair / upgrade to the airbag system and I asked them to replace it free of charge under the extended warranty I bought but was told it was not covered.
The extended warranty has been a complete waste of money as each time something has gone wrong I've found it not to be covered i.e apparently the rear light cluster / bulb holder assembly is "quote" not an integrated part of the cars electrical system. This particular fault was eventually done free after I kicked up one hell of a fuss but I've had no luck with the USB / iPod audio / sat nav system which has some issues because this was retrospectively fitted 9 months from new (by the same dealer who sold the car) for the cars second owner - the excuse this time was "it's not a factory fitted item".

My next car will be an Audi !

They have there problems also,

I've had my car bought second hand coming up to 3yrs done (135k)I didn't bother with extended warranty, as I mentioned above they're replacing mine for free. so I'll stick with the Benz they have really looked after me, I've had a lot gone wrong.
Cruise control
rear Tail light harness burnt out twice and the globe holder (now have the upgraded ones)
Water pump
thermostat housing
Charge air hose
all engine mounts replaced
and now this command unit

90% fixed for free I'll be looking for another in the near future

May I ask how to remove the wood trim piece around the COMAND knob (E350) in order to take the whole device out . Did you pry it up and pulled forward that piece ? And is it enough, or the cup holder section must be also taken out to reach and disconnect the electrical connection ? Tks.

Well I had my command control knob fix today free of charge, and now my wife decided to put her window down the other night and when she went to put it up the bloody Window Switch come out on her finger.

(The black insert)

So while I was at the dealers today I ask how much to have it replaced $150.00 and they tell me that's at trade price.

Part at trade $75.00
labour about half hour $75.00

I can't wait to see what next I'll have to replace.

Hate to drag this up again, but my command knob just died the scroll death yesterday. I'm going to attempt the repair, but should I fail, what is the part number I will need to purchase?

2010 W212 (E550). Not sure if they are universal and the above listed part would work or not...

Thanks for the post! I fixed mine in just over an hr. The only thing I did different was drill a small hole in the center and put a tiny screw through the metal part of the shaft and into the plastic. Works like new now.

I would like to order the part before I take the car apart and my dealer wanted $525USD for it. (I'm in New York) Also worth mentioning, my car went out of warranty approximately 40 days ago and the dealer wont do a thing about it. Absurd! Much appreciated. Thanks!

Did you try customer service through MBUSA? You can open a case so they can consider a goodwill adjustment since you just sent out of warranty.

Talking Fixed it myself

I did consider that but after seeing how common this is, I just decided to fix it myself. Even if MB did cover it, they would just install a new part that would break again in 4 years and I would have to give up hours of my time to go back and fourth to the dealer. I just fixed it today and it took all of 2 hours of my time and about $10 in parts (epoxy and trim remover). It should never break now. I used this video as a guide:
It worked just as described. I also used a PDF that someone else had posted on here to figure out how to remove the trim. See here and use the 2nd PDF. Steps 1-4 show how to remove the trim to expose the torx screws to remove the controller. The guy that posted that YouTube video only shows the C class, which is vastly different than the E350. Thanks for all of the help.

Scroll death

It's interesting that everyone's scroll knob seems to go out after 4 years. I bought a 2011 S212 about a month or so ago and mine went out like clockwork. What a pain!

This hit me yesterday. 5 minutes later I learned just how common this is.

Dealership in Georgetown, TX:
labor 210
part(s) 663

Looks like I'll be trying to fix this myself!

Was that $663 total or $873 total? Either way

same happened to me a week ago. Used the knob to select address on NAV and adjust zoom on map. On way back after restart, control would no longer recognize turning the knob. Guess I was too rough with it. Funny thing is I rarely bother using the MB nav and the knob for that matter - just didn't want to setup waze at first but I did later as MB nav sucks.

My ELW will cover it but I will likely wait until something else comes up to make the deductible worth it.

663 was just for parts. Though after I checked the part number the tech gave me, I don't think he was looking at the right part.

Either way, does anyone who's done this on their own have a clear explanation on just how exactly to remove the left/right trim pieces? From the diagram with the arrows, I just can't seem to figure out exactly which way the pull/pry/push/etc.

2010 E350 Coupe - Controller Knob

My situation is a little different in that it is cosmetic. The controller module works. The knob finish is flaking off. The knob is chrome on outside dial, and black in center. The black in center looks horrible as it has worn off. Any ideas on how to refinish ? Can't find anything on ebay or other that is not the WHOLE controller and a little expensive just for a cosmetic problem.

You will need a torx 10 and a 15 as well as a 8. The screw that holds the command knob in is smaller than T10. In the youtube video his is a T10 but mine was smaller. Fixing the broken shaft was not hard, just follow the video. Getting the controller out was the hard part. There is a front tab and you have to take out the front console that covers the cup holder etc. Getting that front console piece back in was real tough. I had to eventually loosen the back armrest area to push back that section so the front section could slide back into its place. This front console install/removal was the only hard part of this task.

But now i can zoom in on my navi again. There is no other way to do that once the scroll part of the knob goes bad.

Hi, this is my first posting. Thank you so much for all the valuable information.

I had the same problem, so I got the knob ordered, trying to replace it. I was almost done, until I encountered the trouble dsrabb mentioned. I could not get the lifted front console part (ashtray) back into the place. Dsrabb mentioned that he had to loosen the back armrest, but I don't know how or what to loosen up.

Please help me. Thank you so much.

Thanks konigstiger,
But the attached pdf is more about the general trims. Did you refer me the right document?

More specific question :
- When trying to push back the center middle console (ashtray part), how are the covers, i.e. front/rear stowage compartment trim parts (11, 12 in pdf) should be? Should it be fully closed, half way open, or fully open?

- Still not knowing how to loosen the back armrest area (by dsrabb); Do I need to disassemble all the back armrest area in order to find the space to push back the center middle console?
Any further explanation about this would be a great help.

Thanks in advance.

Just found out that when I spin my command knob to the left or to the right, it turns, but, nothing happens in the screen.
Is this the same issue of this thread?
