seat cooling fan
Hello people , long story short , today i opened my rear left door and found a little fan on the floor , just chilling around , i picked it up to take a look at it , it had some name on it(papst) , so i googled , and found out it is mostl likely a drivers side cooling seat fan , im confused , why did it fall off , and what can i do to fix it , since the bottom seat part doesnt cool any more,, any stories like this?? any help? thanks , and im out of warranty 55k 2010 e550

Definitely don't k of how to fix but along similar lines, even when my seat fans are on high I can hardly notice any difference other than feeling the vibration of the fans turning.
You guys notice a big difference when the seat cooling is on?

I've had the cooling on two E class cars now. It works so poorly that even the fan gave up in this case. It should be a liquid system. The fans do nothing.

The fans are a joke in the e class
I read somewhere that someone put those taxi cab beads on the seat to space his *** from the vent holes and it proved the air flow. Lol
There should be a/c air flowing through these vents

There are some real cooled seats out there. Infiniti, Cadillac and Kia come to mind. They either use air from the climate control when engaged or have their own separate system that works when air is off. Those Infiniti M seats will freeze your rear off. MB has vented only like Lexus and Acura. I feel a difference when they are on but thickness of clothing and cabin air temp impact the effectiveness. Wish they were cooled.
I can't imagine a fan just falling out of the seat. What a joke. Have you looked up under the seat to see where it may have been mounted. I thought the fans were smaller than that. I imagined several small fans like in a pc.

I actually have an M56s which was the basis for my question. Makes you feel like your wet it gets so cold on high
You mean to tell me that all that is happening is that it is blowing air from inside the cabin and it is not from the ac?

My E350 has the ventilated seats. It is nice but nothing great. Keep in mind guys MB does not make a cooled seat but a ventilated seat. There is a difference.

Actually I think the fan picks up cool air from the rear floor vents and pushes it through the seat. I have noticed better cooling performance when my A/C fan was running faster. Try that and see if you don't notice a difference in your seat cooling performance.

I thought those rear floor vents were only for heat. I thought those vents on the back of the seat provided the air intake for the ventilated seats but maybe that is only for the seat back, not the bottom.

Correct, the ventilated MB seats circulate cabin air through the seat. While they will not chill your rear, they do have a drying effect when used with the seat heater if you do in fact wet your pants
Maybe you can get a pic with your cell phone of both front seats and then compare to see where the fan was located. Can you tell how it was attached? I didn't notice any wire hookups from your photo.

Maybe it was some leftover, dropped piece from manufacture that the workers just left under the seat. Sure looks "disconnected."
But I will agree, the seat ventilation system is terrible --- actually a scam, IMO. I've had Toyotas with much better ventilation.

I just tried with my smartphone. Just sliding the phone along the floor was tough given there is so little clearance. From the video, what I saw was what you would expect - metal bracing, wires, insulation, seat springs, etc. Nothing along the lines of what you have there. Of course there could be something on the topside of the bracing that you can't see from below. Maybe you should try the tissue test as another member suggested and see if there is a dead zone when comparing the two seats.

just tried the tissue thing , and it looks like the bottom part is actually working (atleast looks like it) , when i put a tissue and turn the cooling on , it goes down the seat. now im really confused.. weird stuff

well at least you have some airflow. Since there are multiple fans the results could be misleading. I came across a couple of interesting links about mercedes using papst fans in the seat on the s class.

Some of the photos may help with locating the fans. From the cross sections, it look like the fans are above the seat springs embedded in the padding which makes it even more unlikely that one could simply fall out.

On my R there are only 3 butt fans and 2 back fans. I'm not sure about the E, though, but that brochure from Papst may be misleading showing more than or a fan configuration for a different Benz.

I guess its not that big of a deal that one of the fans possibly fell out , if according to those PDFs there are not 2 or 3 fans like I thought before...

I think that pdf refers to the S class and it could be many years old. It is merely a point of reference. How did you find out how many fans the R has?
