722.9 Transmission Oil Change
Decided to finally tackle this myself. I ordered the Titan 4134 fluid, new gasket, new filter, new torque converter drain plug, and new drain plug washer for transmission pan.
I used instructions found on here and other sites along with watching the youtube video of a gentlemen changing his C class which has the same tranny. I followed the instructions to the letter.
I made my own tool to add the oil with a shut off valve, nothing fancy but it worked. I used pressure to add the oil by drilling 2 holes in the oil quart cap; one for the tube and a smaller hole for the compressor gun. Slowly introducing air into the oil quart forced the oil out through the tube and into the tranny (really simple).
The toughest thing was getting to the torque converter drain plug, its a such a difficult angle. I was worried about stripping it. I had to bend a metal bar out of the way that was in front. Im sure if I had a more robust selection of tools it wouldnt have been a problem.
In the end I drained out 8.5L (seems thats how much everyone has), put it 9L at once, warmed up to proper temp and let approx .5L drain out until it slowed to a trickle.
I added a neomydium magnet to the pan for extra protection.
The only thing I forgot to do was flush the oil cooler line which is shown on the youtube video, I will do it next time.
I did a similar change on my 5 series bmw last year.
At the end of the day serious money saved!

Torquing Pan Bolts
From what I have read, the transmission pan bolts are initially torqued to 4 newton meter and then tightened an additional 180 degrees for the 722.9 transmission. First, I have a beam style torque wrench - is this sufficiently accurate or do I need a different style torque wrench that reads down to 4nm more accurately? Secondly, when turning the bolt an additional 180 degrees, do you use an angle gauge or do you just eye-ball it? Thanks

I really enjoyed this video. I know there are plenty on youtube, but this recomendation really helped me out. Im a freak about my trannys performance and truly oversensitive to the inconsistencies which are obvious in the 722.9; Also a lovely piece of machinery when working well... I wonder, my car just hit 30k. There is no normal plan to have changed the fluid by now through the dealer correct?
I would love to do these myself, and wonder how often one can do this without it being too soon? Is 30k too soon? Because Id swear it needs it already

Peace of mind you mean? A piece of mind, =D; Yes though I know what your saying. I just dont know how often you can change it or how soon you are supposed to (should it have been changed already by the dealer, i got at 27k) From what this guy says in the video it makes me feel like I could be due..

It is recommended that you do a transmission service every 40,000 miles. When I worked at a dealership I think Mercedes recommended it every 50,000 miles, if I remember correctly.

MBWorld Fanatic!
MB recommeds 40k on 7g, 70k on 7g+ transmission. in the E class, 2012 and newer has 7g+ with 70k mile service interval using a different fluid than the 7g.

Thanks for posting this. I just changed mine. Took me about 3 hours on my lift. Nothing was really hard to do. It took what seemed like forever for the fluid to drain from the torque converter and also took forever for it to warm up. It was kind of annoying to find the drain plug on the converter. I think I will replace it before 40k more miles next time since it wasn't so hard and overall wasn't very expensive for the parts, I am thinking 30k-35k miles.

I have been taking my car to the dealer for this service every 40K miles, currently at 98K.
Watching the video is great to learn the procedure but I personally hate getting under the car (I get really dizzy ) and transmissions are so sensitive, I would hate to mess it up and have to get a new one.
