w212 e550 cant start with a key

Hello!!
i had a question if anyone have any ideas about my situation , i have a 2010 e550 with keyless go , and push start button , once i remove that button and try to start it with the key it doesnt do anything.
Went to dealer , they didnt see any errors or fault codes, but told me in case to find the problem they need 2nd key (which i dont have) , and i dont really want to spend $300 (roughly) to get a key just to get that tested.

any help is appreciated , thank you

Have you tried replacing the battery on the key fob?

As a fail safe I didn't think the battery is required when using the fob as a key.

I think the battery is still necessary, but should still wrk on a very low charge. I have keyless go and never use the button. I also have 3 keys, LOL. Too bad I can't give you one of mine. Sounds like you need to order a new key. It's probably a faulty key since there are no codes.

The car should start even if the key has a dead battery. That is one of the purposes of being able to use the key.Earlier models have an RFID chip in the key which enables the car to be started when key is inserted in ignition switch. I have to assume they still use this system. The dealer should be able to diagnose the problem. You can get a second key ordered through dealer, they just need proof of ownership and probably $300 or so of your money. The keys are unique to each VIN number so a key from another car will not work.

why not?
I hate the button. I had enough "key not recognized" with my key in my pocket or briefcase that I said screw it. All of the other looking/unlocking functions, etc are still nice to have.
I can start my car with my foot off the brake.....

Thanks, I was just curious. I like being able to leave the key in my pcoket to start the car,... but that certainly would get frustrating if it started acting up.

My iPhone and key have never gotten along from day one and I just got tired of making sure they were in divorce mode before I got in the car. Never a problem with my other keyless go cars (Infiniti-Honda). If you have an issue it is more than likely your phone and key playing games with each other.

I think the key is the problem. Ordered keys in the US come out of the Texas facility, programmed and ready for you to use immediately. Just stick the new key in the ignition and you will get a message to wait for the key to be activated. That takes a few seconds and then you are good to go. I had a bad key and ordered a spare key and the dealer lost it when it arrived. He then ordered me another one. After a couple of weeks the new key arrived and in that time they had found the lost key so now I have 3. They all work as advertised.
There is no short cut to a new key on Ebay or any other source. It must come directly from Mercedes. Good luck!

Turning a key seems so odd to me since I had my first car with push button start in 2008.

I'm old enough to remember when you had to turn a key AND press a button to start your car.

Regards,
Don

Been starting and opening/locking doors/trunk by touch since 2006. Key never leaves my pocket. Can't go back. I know it sounds silly, but spending a day with a rental/loaner without keyless reminds me how convenient the feature is.

At least the MB gives the option of using the keyless or not. That is helpful for valet or car washes.

Agreed on being given an option. Neither my Infiniti nor my daughter's Honda give you that option of a removable start button.
