S l o w downshifts E5504matic 2011
2011 E550 4Matic 35k miles. Runs like a charm. Except, on the highway if I take my foot off the accelerator and I'm cruising (e.g., 50-60mph) and I floor the accelerator, there is a NOTICEABLE delay before it drops down to the next gear and gets me going. If feels like forever, especially when the car in the next lane is approaching. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

The topic was addressed numerous times. To eliminate the delay, SprintBooster (SB) (many including myself have tone of positives to say about this amazing product to the point that I would not drive a pre-facelift W212, even V8 except DI version, without it) or Pedal Box should be used. Use search facility.

Just searched "pedalbox" and "sprint booster"........ See, that's different. I had been characterizing the problem as "slow downshift". It's not slow downshift is it? Are you telling me it's slow throttle response from the electronic throttle "linkage"?

I've got the same car and notice the same issue. Tranny is just too luxury minded for my taste in those situations; however I am not interested in installing devices or tuning. I often just downshift with two clicks of the paddle and it's ready to roar on the highway. I've tried using sport mode but that doesn't seem to help in those situations in my opinion. You could try an ECU reset. It felt like a new car after I did that but it slowly adapted to my regular grandpa style thanks to my mild stop and go commute.

I also reset my throttle. (See, https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...set-works.html )
Reset your throttle, my friend. Don't stop to think. Don't over analyze - just do it. DO IT NOW.........! IT WORKS!
I'll let you know how the pedal-hack-thing works.

IMHO, while Reset does help somewhat, all pre-DI engine cars need more than just a Reset - they need at minimum SprintBooster or PedalBox for even better control for those who can figure out all the settings.
Edit: slow response in my experience is not only related to pre-DI cars, but probably much more so to pre 2014 cars (except ML - they all (pre 2015) have very noticeable delay):
A. Before I bought my 2014 CLS550 (DI) I "test drove" a month old (that was 18 months ago) 2013 CLS550 (also DI) for a day. 2013 CLS550 I test drove had a significant throttle delay to the point it was very hard to drive it smoothly (same as my former 2010 E550 coupe(non-DI)), while my current 2014 CLS550 has very minor delay (but I do feel it, but just slightly, still thinking of putting SB back into this one),
B. My former 2014 E350 rwd basically had no delay (it drove similar to 2012 E350 rwd with SrintBooster (identical engines in both)),
c. My current 2014 E550 W4 has no delay - none.

No reason for it not to. Certainly worthy of a try, it takes about 2-1/2 minutes total. Try it and let us know.
Another performance tip. Before passing, hold the left - (minus sign) downshift paddle down for 1 second, it will put the trans in the optimum gear for passing.

I was not happy with mine when I got it and took it to my tech at my dealer. He seemed to be able to tweak it reasonably well all things considered.
When downshifting to use engine braking anything above 4th is pretty useless.

1. Turn the ignition key to the on (not start) position.
2. Press the gas pedal to the floor and hold for five seconds.
3. Turn the key to the "off" position (don't remove the key), then release the gas pedal.
4. Wait at least two minutes for ECU to reset.

Sorry to hear it. Try it again.. read what I said about not opening the door during the wait. The multifunction display above the steering wheel should go dark during the two minute wait. Leave everything alone while you wait.

Well, thanks to 3MB's I researched the issue re-characterizing it as "slow throttle response" and ordered the Pedal Box thing..... (See, https://mbworld.org/forums/w210-amg/...o-brainer.html )
I also reset my throttle. (See, https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...set-works.html )
