Front tire clearance

Is anybody running 255/40/19 tires on the front of their w212? I want to use symmetrical size tires for ease of rotating them, if possible. The wheels I want to use are Niche Targa 19x8.5 or 19x9.5 with offset options of 25, 34 or 42. My car is an E350 sport sedan, not lowered. I want a bulletproof setup with no issues, but also want as big a tire as I can go. Thanks.

Why the sarcasm? Am I wishful thinking I can upsize the front tires?

I've heard of guys running 265/35/19 and even some 20" sizes. I'm pretty confident a 255/35/19 will work well. And if I could fit a 40 series tire, all the better.

After having 19"s on my BMW they were anything but "bullet proof".

I have no idea what size you can run but I do not think that large wheels and thin tires will ever be "bullet proof".

Although this appears to be a wheels for sale forum, perhaps you should try the wheel and tire calculator in the actual wheels and tires forum.

It would be nice if the desired size wheel and tire were listed as compatible in the Owner's Manual but that's not the case. People can only give you opinions. Even if someone is already running the same setup, that's no guarantee it won't present problems, not to mention harsher ride, increased likelihood of pothole damage (depending on location) and possibly altered handling charactistics, not necessarily for the better. You might have to try it to see whether it meets your definition of "bulletproof".

Forget all the opinions. Go to http://www.1010tires.com/Tools/Wheel-Offset-Calculator# and plug in the stock sizes and what you want to do and see what comes out. There is also a link on that page to a tire size calculator.
Remember higher offset above stock is going to have more potential for clearance issues and, while I have no experience to go on I don't know what the implications might be on suspension if a relatively low offset i.e. 28.

So, tire-size-conversion.com has some cool tools. According to the conversion table a 265/35/19 would actually be a closer fit than the 255/40/19 assuming I could spare another approx. 3/4" in tire width. The sidewalls are only slightly smaller. The ET42 offset would poke the wheel out +6mm over the stock ET48 offset I believe. Question is, will the outside fender be too close for comfort?

My 2015 Owner's Manual lists the following tire/wheel combination for the front axle (FA) of the E63. No idea if the clearances are the same for your car.

FA: 255/35 ZR19 (96 Y) XL
FA: 9.0 J x 19 H2
Wheel offset: 1.46 in (37 mm)

265/35-19 will barely fit front with perfect offset and width (9-9.5") wheel. As per original post, 8.5" wide wheel can not be used as 265/35 can not be mounted on it, so if you'll use 9.5" wide wheel (with offset of et42 as per above post) you maybe be too close on the inside to rub suspension (also tire will be outside the fender line). (As a side note, I have 255/35-19 on 9.5" wide wheels front and rear, 4matic, et42 front and et35 rear, upfront it has maybe 2mm room on the inside and wheel/tire pokes outside fender line a bit).

Bulletproof meaning no rubbing and car behaves as stock

By wheel line, you are referring to the outside lip of the wheel? So the tires would appear a bit beefy?

No, I meant to say "outside fender line" instead of "wheel line".

IMO, the only way to guarantee that would be to use factory-specified wheels and tires, and to at least be close, probably using the specified sizes of wheels and tires.

threeMBs...........what tires are you using? I know some tires "run small" and I wonder if a guy could get away with the upsize? The E63, as I understand it (PER NOKA), runs the 255/35/19. Don't know the offset they use. Does anyone know if the E63 has the same dimensions as the e350, with regard to the wheels/tires clearances?

This is the difference in inches between the stock 245/40/18 and the upsize 265/35/19 tires according to tire-size-conversion.com

Diameter --> 25.7 / 26.3
Width --> 9.65 / 10.43
Sidewall --> 3.86 / 3.65
