Navigation displaying in KM then miles; rain sensing wiper issue
Hello all!
First time posting, but long time reader....this site has been such a great resource.
I've recently experienced some very odd issues with my 2010 E550 and wondering if anyone else has encountered the same. Lately, I've noticed that when using navigation to, well, navigate to a selected destination, the unit will display in metric for the first five to ten minutes (sometimes longer) before switching back to miles and feet. I've selected the display to readout in miles, but to no avail.
Secondly, I've also noticed that my rain sensitive wipers are not so very sensing these days...or at least, they don't seem to do a very good job of determining when to swipe and when not to swipe. At times, they swipe when the windshield is clear, and at other times, the rain is pouring and they don't. I hit a bump the other day and the wipers went full force for about two minutes before settling down into rhythm, which suggests to me that its a wiring or connection issue. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this.
Interested to hear feedback from others.
cheers.

Same car here. I have not seen any issue with the Navi switching gears like that. The rain sensing wipers have a similar issue as you described every so often. My E500 was exactly the same. Sometimes they would go crazy and sometimes when you need them they act lethargic. I would just turn them off and right back on and then they work like normal again. If it's raining really hard I just advance the wipe manually and avoid the sensor control. Quite frankly, the sensor control has always been temperamental for me. It's like the Parktronic system getting all funky if it snows or is freezing rain. Sometimes it's best to just override some of these "helpful" accessories.

Thanks for the input. Interestingly enough, i've noticed a marked difference in the performance of my rain sensing wipers in the e550 versus my older e350. The e350 was pretty good at finding the happy medium, whereas the newer car is all over the place. But yeah, sometimes it's better just to outsmart the smart devices.
Off to the dealer to see if I can diagnose both problems. ....

Good for you!

Seems like it would cost them less to just pop in a new head unit.

After one month the dealer started replacing the head unit on my car today. It seems it was the first time the engineers back in Germany have heard of this issue. So if anyone else has this issue point them to this thread an hopefully it won't take as long to get resolved.
From what I've gathered going through posts it seems to impact some Comand units and is not specific to just one car model. Software reflashes don't fix and it seems to require replacing the head unit.
I saw the dealer's work order for this and it was around $3,000
. That doesn't even include the cost of the loaner car.

What is the code for rain sensing wipers package for 2014 e350?
I have rainx, which helps me very much, I don't need to use the wipers that often, on highway, I don't need them almost, unless it is pouring..!
Thanks

Rain sensing wipers are standard equipment on the E class. There is no code.

But, do I need to leave it on in the very first stage or even when off it'll be automatic?

Yes, the very first turn of the stalk is the rain sensing position. It should sweep once then park until needed by sensing rain on the upper windshield. If you leave it in positon 1 and restart the car it will sweep once and park again until needed.
