How to activate this light?

The rear fog is usually a single left light within the left rear housing that burns brighter red than the others. The fog is activated typically using the light switch.
Again, speculation by most replies when the manual will explain it.

It is not possible to activate these in US spec cars as there are no LED / hardware inside. Even if you buy a Euro spec tail lamp it would not work as some programming of SAM needs to be changed. The changes are done by MBUSA (and the other German carmakers as well) in an apparent effort to save on costs (it's beyond me why would they skimp on LEDs worth $10 on such luxury cars).
Leads me to believe that only someone with detailed knowledge about the coding and operation of both euro and American cars would be able to switch those tail lamps.

Wow, thanks for the answer. So they are useless pieces of plastic in North America. What a disappointment

I don't know the answer but in over 30 yr of MB ownership I have never seen MB do something as wantonly stupid as you are suggesting. My guess is they are back up lights but I can't be sure because I don't have access to your manual which would tell you.
Anything here is speculation including my guess.
