Question How long should it take to get registration?

I bought an E350 on June 1. and drove out of the dealership - MB Manhattan - on that day with a temporary registration that expires July 16.

The dealer took the sales tax and was supposed to handle the registration and title requests.

So far, I still have neither registration or title. Seems it's taking a bit too long as I will only have 10 days left after the 4th of July holiday.

Does anyone have any experience in having the dealer handle these things?

Should I have had the registration already?

thanks

I had to get ahold of the state police in Illinois to get the title for my car. Dealer never sent it in until they got involved. Check with the state to see if they sent it in. You can find out usually with a phone call

If your temp. tag expires, neither the patrol officer nor the judge will care whose fault it is. You get the ticket. As a minimum you will have to go to court to explain and hope judge believes you. That's your time lost, even if no money. You cannot "pass it on." It's your car, it's your responsibility per the law.
Contact your state DMV to determine where the problem lies.
Did you call the dealer?
Can't speak for NY, but in SC, many dealerships send one guy to DMV one day per week to register cars. Long, long, long line of these guys at every DMV and takes a long time for each one. Maybe doing it on-line now, but who knows.

that's unfortunate, that we would be held responsible for someone's job, they get paid to make sure the car they sell gets registered.........

when I had the brake pads replaced on my S class, I went to the dealer for the warranty work.......a couple of months later one of my wheels had a bad squeak: do I want to GO BACK to the dealer? NO!
I went to my indy shop and one of the shims was not put back correctly....so they fixed it for me and explained AND showed me what the issue was.......and I was glad to not have to return to the dealer and 'reward' them with more billable work.......whether I'm paying for it or MB

amen to that. But don't we all wish everyone who was paid to do their job did it well and on time.

I wonder if there is any penalty for a dealer who does not process registrations timely. I would imagine that is part of their responsibility as a licensed dealer.

I concur!

like you said, a LICENSED dealer providing registration seems so basic......

OP, have you gotten it yet?

The OP never said the dealer didn't do its job nor that DMV did not do its. Maybe we should get all the facts before placing blame.

didn't think my post placed blame on anyone. it merely posed a question.

And I expect the OP will find out the source of the delay in due course.

Takes about 45 days in the NY/NJ area these days. Just call your dealer and tell him you will need another temp tag in about a week, if your registration does not come in

I gotta admit, my timing is perfect ! Whenever I begin to worry about something that has not come - it arrives the next day!

I emailed the dealer who said they would look into it, and told me it had been mailed on Tuesday. It arrived today... three days to travel about 8 miles from NYC to my home 8 miles away.... not the dealer's fault at all! They were very helpful.

Title will come soon...

I doubt the DMV can handle a one month turn around for registration. The dealers are usually good at handling registration requirements. Don't worry until one day before the temp expires and if you still don't have the permanent tags go back to the dealer. If they screwed up they can get you an extension. In CA people often don't even put their license plates on and just drive around with the expired temp taped to the inside of their front windshield. If you're not pulled over no one will even know it's expired and you don't have to worry about traffic cameras.

from the dealer usually 3 months, keep the temporary reg, in the window till then, I've had an issue with reg one time when the dealer (Moda Auto lounge) in the bay area, sold me a car and wrote down the wrong VIN, took six months and after calling DMV hella times, they sent out a DMV investigator who came to my work and after we talked I got my registration in less than a week. DMV is slow, you gotta hit up the DMV investigators if it takes too long and they get **** done. BTW the DMV investigator had a gun, don't know what for, but they come strapped lol

Glad the system worked for you as it should. It almost always does. Unfortunate that some posters decided to blame all dealers, dealer personnel and DMV employees for a problem that never existed.
Happy Motoring! Enjoy the new car.
