Hard start after getting gas/now runs horribly

Hello, I am hoping someone can help me. I have a 2010 E550 which has been in the MB shop for 3 weeks now. For the past 3 years, it wouldn't start after filling up most of the time. After repeated tows and visits to the dealer, they continued to tell me there was nothing wrong with it. Once it happened while filling up and a retired auto mechanic happened to see my distress and told me to put my feet on the brake and gas pedals at the same time while starting it. It worked! So I learned to live with this "solution" until last month when it started running very rough, sputtering or chugging sort of. I took it back to MB and they said they had fixed it ($2300.00 later). As I was driving it home, nothing had changed. It still ran the same and wouldn't start after getting gas unless I did the same fix. Back I went to the dealer and now they are saying they can correct the problem for $7000.00 (minus a credit of 2000.00). I have asked for a written estimate and am hoping someone out there can help me get to the bottom of this. I no longer have faith in this dealer. Suggestions? Signed, "down in the south"

If I had to guess it sounds like you have a bad idle air control valve, although without seeing your car I am only guessing.

Get a second opinion before pumping 5k into it...either a good Indy or another MB dealer

Weirdest story I have ever heard. Sounds possessed. I would not have kept the car for more than a week if I had to put both feet on the pedals to start it.

Never heard of this. Hopefully you can get some help with this. I had a similar problem but not exactly and the dealer said I had a dead spot in the tank sort of thing. This was a decade ago and on a Ford. Eventually they fixed it under warranty.

Exclamation Dealer said it was fixed

Sounds like a fuel distribution issue, electrical-mechanical. If the dealer said it was "fixed", ask for a printout of what was checked, or replaced, and accomplished with the 2.3K. Fuel distribution issues should be repaired by checking each component of the fuel system from Tank through Injector to isolate and validate each components serviceability. This is time consuming and components are expensive so most dealers will charge you appropriately. This may be a unique and isolated case so you may want to check with Konigstiger to see if he has come across this issue in the past. Recommend you escalate to Corporate if this is a first at your MB dealer prior to spending 7K.

So,
You are out of warranty paying your own.

The first step is to check the fuel rail pressure. You or your Indy shop can do this very easily. A fuel pressure gauge will cost you $20-$30 or so. I don't know the MB fuel pressure "standard" for these cars but I would think it is somewhere around 30-35 psi.The Stiger probably could tell us about the fuel pressure?

Let me get this straight. So you car has a starting problem only when the gas tank is full. You mean if the tank is less than full it starts perfectly ...??? Phew...

This can be a coincidence. When the car is first started up cold everything can be fine but after driving like to a gas station the fuel pump runs all the time and gets heated up. Then when stopping for fuel it has trouble starting as the pump is still hot and not performing...?

Fuel rail pressure check is an easy DIY job to do. Just need to know what the fuel rail pressure needs to be at.

If it is low it can be due to bad fuel pump or due to bad fuel pressure regulator, which should be located at the end of the fuel rail. Replacing this regulator should be an easy DIY job too.

Being a MB car does not mean it works any different than any other 4-stroke engine. MB has a way to build the cars so that people are afraid working on them but in the end of it the cars are actually build for the easiest maintenance. You just need to find out how to take the car apart.
