E-350 Onboard Hard Drive
Hello,
Is it true that the onboard hard drive only allows copy music from the CD, and not from the other sources such as Memory Card.
I just bought a used 2013 E-350 Sedan, and found out that I could only register music to internal hard drive from the CD, but not from the Memory Card such as SD.
I also noticed that there is no on/off button. For example, if I am playing the radio or CD then want to switch to navigation, it will will switch, but the radio or CD will still be playing. The only way to turn the music completely, I will need to turn off the whole display and then go to navigation only.
Please advise!
Regards,

For muting the radio or other source you do it by pressing the mute/unmute button in the middle of the four buttons on the right hand side on the steering wheel. Sound will stay off until you press it again or restart the car.
This same button mutes the navigation voice if you press it when instructions are heard. To get NAVI instructions audible again you need to press the COMAND control knob in the NAVI screen and then again on the RPT tab or restart the car or start a new route.

I have a 2010 E550 and the only thing I can record is a real music CD. It will not record CD loaded with any other formats of music, only original format that comes with the CD when you buy it. I guess MB is taking part in preventing music copying...

I don't really see the point of the hard drive. It's dated tech. I have 160GB ipod with all my music connected, and there is also option for a big USB or SD card. The other options render the HD useless.

If there was a way to transfer music from other devices I would disagree. Since you would not need to lug around an extra device like an Ipod etc. once you transfer over the music. However having to burn/Record CDs to it is a slow and hassle type of process.
Not that an Ipod is a huge device or anything but I really only want to carry my phone any other crap is irritating to have on me or hanging around in my car with wires etc.

My ipod never leaves the car, but you also have the option of a USB or SD which are extremely cheap these days for more capacity than the built-in drive.

Love my Music Register (hard drive). Wish my other two vehicles had it. To turn off audio, I just change to something I don't have, such as memory card. It will say device not installed and continue with navigation screen.
With the MR, you can edit title info for what you have recorded, delete songs (files) from albums (folders), delete folders, etc. You can also designate which folder a recording will go to. So you can group all CD's by artist, rather than letting system automatically do it by album title.
One caution is to be careful when editing as you can do it while vehicle is moving. All of a sudden you realize you have been driving for five minutes without looking at the road.
If you do record a CD with various artist, it will dowload it to a general set of folders of Various Artists, or something like that. However, when you start recording you can designate an exitisting folder. Or later, find where it went under various and then re-title that particular folder.
I have several CD's that I made on a PC and recorded them to Music Register without any problems.

I just use a 128GB USB flash drive that I bought for $25. It's way more capacity than the music register and it's much faster to copy files to it using a PC than ripping a CD to the hard drive in the music register. Although now I'm beginning to think I might need a 256GB soon

CD's recorded directly to the Music Register will produce better sound than going through a USB or other device.

I do this in another vehicle that does not have hard drive recording capability. I have played a CD on the vehicle that I also recorded through PC to a USB. Then listened to the USB recording in the vehicle. The CD itself sounds better.

Coming from an old school glove box-mounted 6-disc changer, all these audio options make me feel like a kid in the candy store... I love it if only for the novelty.
I like the MR, but I also use 4-5 small capacity iShuffles.
My MR is loaded with my favs. I play it on random and, unsurprisingly, like just about every song! Ha.
Most - if not all - of my iShuffles are loaded to the gills with a single artist each. When I want to dive deep with a single artist, I connect up one of the iShuffles.
Then there's Howard on XM/Sirius. Cracks me up. Good interviews. Etc.

You are not taking into account the 15 to 20 minutes the music register requires to index the media the first time you try to search. If you add a single track it will reindex again from the start.

If you're talking about a USB flash drive, plug it into the USB port in the middle console. I have 128GB flash driver loaded up with tons of music.
